Cawsey Steps Down in PCC Campaign

10 May 2012 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Former Brigg and Goole MP Ian Cawsey yesterday announced that he is standing down from the campaign to become Humberside's first Police and Crime Commissioner.

This follows Ian's appointment to become Chief of Staff for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) of which he has been a patron for many years.

As a member of parliament, Ian worked tirelessly to champion the welfare of animals and helped introduce the hunting ban, protecting thousands of wild animals in Britain from a frightening and humiliating death in the name of entertainment.

In a statement on his web site Ian said "Today I have accepted an offer to become the Chief of Staff at the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). Therefore, and with some regret, I have withdrawn from the selection process to be Labour’s candidate for the Police & Crime Commissioner election later this year. My new position will be a demanding and full time post and I simply believe it is incompatible with running for election and certainly it would not be possible to do both jobs if elected."

This leaves former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott in the running with Keith Hunter, a former police commander on the Humberside force. Cawsey's exit from the race does bring in to question whether we should see former politicians such as Prescott entering the running for such a position, or if their previous political background will essentially result in the role becoming overly politicized as some have suggested.
The WSPA which Iain is going to become chief of staff at is the largest animal welfare organisation in the world, headquartered in London with offices in Australia, Africa, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, China, Denmark, Germany, India, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Colombia, Thailand, Sweden and the USA. They have hundreds of staff  carrying out work all over the world.

Ian says "The chance to work in such a senior position on an international basis for such a brilliant charity was simply too good to turn down."
Here's wishing you all the best in your new roll.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
