Care Home Protest

28 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following the announced consultation with the public over the closure of The Lilacs and Scotter House care homes, the North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance has today called for a lobby of the council at their next full council meeting on the 30th of March. In a statement released yesterday, Martin Copson of the Coalition of Resistance said "Thanks to everyone who came on the March (on the 26th) in London, it was a really good day and has sent a strong message to the ConDems. The march was an important show of strength to the government, but our task is now to continue building locally fighting for every job and for every vital public service." The CoR has called for a public demonstration to be held on the 30th at the next council meeting, giving local residents and users of the services an opportunity to tell council leaders about their concerns regarding these closures. We reported on the 10th of March how the council had entered into a consultation with residents over their plans for the closure of these two care homes. However, judging by the comments left on our article it is clear that some members of the public are unhappy about how this consultation is being undertaken. Scotter house provides respite care to people with learning difficulties. The Lilac's provides rehabilitation and enablement services for older people who are coming out of hospital and transitioning back to their own homes. Martin concluded by saying "If these homes are lost it is very unlikely that a comparable service will be available for service users and will be a blow to the whole community. These are the cinderella services that many of us rarely think about but all may need to use one day. It is in all our interests to lobby the council to keep these facilities open." If you are concerned about, or affected by these closures then complete the council consultation and attend the meeting on Wednesday Evening. For those who are unable to make the meeting, VisitScunthorpe.Com will be running a live feed covering the meeting from the home page of their web site from 4pm onwards. Members of the public can contribute to that feed using the hash tag #NLCM. A poster for this event is available for readers to download and distribute as a PDF file from the link below:

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
