COR Austerity and the Riots

19 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following the shocking pictures on our television screens of the rioting in several major cities a couple of weeks ago (including my beloved Manchester) the North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance is holding a public debate next Wednesday Evening to discuss the impact of the disturbances on the communities effected and what caused such significant public disorder.

It promises to be an interesting debate which engages with the youth of Scunthorpe as there will be several college and university students taking the platform in an attempt to provide an insight from a youth's point of view as to what teenagers, students and the young unemployed think about the riots and indeed society as a whole.

On Visit Scunthorpe we've had several different views and lots of comments regarding three different articles posted by readers which has caused thoughtful debate and discussion. It would be great if readers of Visit Scunthorpe could come along and introduce them selves as most have never met, and we could discuss / debate points made on this site with a wider community.

The meeting is to be held at Greeson Hall, next to St George's Church, Froddingham Road, Scunthorpe and will start at 7:30.

Entrance is free, all view are welcome.

As a slight aside, there's an excellent article by a guy I know called Phil Griffin who lives and works in Manchester mainly writing about the city's culture and architecture

I've been asked by Peter Swift, a trustee of Greeson Hall to point out that while Greeson Hall is physically attached to St George's Church, it is in no way connected to the church.

Peter said

"Hi Paul. I'm pleased to note your meeting next Wed, but as a Trustee of Greeson Hall Community Association, am slightly disturbed by reference to "part of St George's Church". It's physically attached, but not connected any other way. I look  forward to next Wednesday"

So apologies to the trustees for in any way misinforming readers that while physically attached to the church that Greeson Hall is connected to it in any other way. My reference to "part of" was purely geographical and has been changed to now read "next to"

Not heard anything of the meeting on the local websites today, any reason?

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
