Battle for Broughton enters its final days

02 May 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Broughton and Appleby in North Lincolnshire has always been a closely contested seat. With just 4 days to go to the election, today is a key day for campaigners to get out knocking on doors before voter's return to work tomorrow. In Broughton its self, we met up with the Labour Campaign Team this morning, and had a quick chat with former Cleethorpes MP Shona McIsaac who was out campaigning and meeting voters. Shona told us that she was concerned about the campaign mounted against the Labour Candidates by the incumbent conservatives Arthur Buynyan and Ivan Glover as it accused the Labour candidates of scaremongering. Of particular concern was the article on potholes stating how the conservative government had granted additional cash for these urgent repairs, but failing to say that the conservatives voted against the labour resolution of applying to the government for these extra funds. Paul Redfern told us "All we want is a fair fight, voter's are sick of negative campaigning and we want to put the people of Broughton and Appleby before politics, that's why on May the 5th voters should elect Bernard and myself". He went on to say "We are listening to voters and want to act on their behalf, this is the way local politics should be, but it can only happen if the voter's want it to". The conservative campaign in Broughton and Appleby has also focused on Labour spending on the Baths Hall, of which they have been very critical, having closed the venue them selves under the last Conservative administration. The Baths Hall was an election pledge made by Labour at the last campaign, the development of the new Bath's Hall was voted for by the residents of North Lincolnshire and has been delivered by the current Labour group as promised and under budget. Today in Broughton the response from voters has been very positive, in the 2007 election there were just 134 votes between Labour and the Conservatives, this is a key, knife edge constituency which is always a tightly run fight between the two main parties. In the 2003 election the Tories gained victory by just 1 vote. Visit Scunthorpe is committed to including commentary and interviews with candidates from all major parties, check back later today when local Independent candidate Neil Eyre standing in the Froddingham ward will be sharing with readers some of the questions he has been asked on the doorstep as he's been running his campaign.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
