Quick update on the meeting we held to discuss the future of Concrete Pond on the 12th, and an opportunity to download some more posters and fliers for the next meeting on the 11th October.

We had over 30 members of the public at the meeting, and also some new members which is very encouraging, so there are now over 60 members in the group.

The council attended again, and Tim Allen Environment Team Manager gave a presentation and took questions and answers regarding a possible alternative to the pond. This received a mixed response and the main concern raised by residents was what would happen to the existing site.

In his presentation Tim accepted that the pond had dried up as a direct result of ground work being undertaken on the near by housing estate. A member of the public had provided the group with photograph showing where the feed pipe had been broken, and committee members had visited the site the previous week. Tim also suggested that the issue could have been compounded further by the lowering of the water table, again due to development work.

The council have promised to carry out two feasibility studies, with costings, to determine what would be involved in moving their proposed scheme forward, and also how the existing pond could be repaired.

A report in to the composition of the mud was made available, its clear there is a lot of heavy metals, other contaminates and some e-coli bacteria, all of which the council maintain pose a minimal public health risk. With regards to the e-coli its not believed to be a fatal strain, but could cause sickness if ingested, so the fence around the site is going to remain in place until the mud is treated and removed. We've sent the report on to some "science" people and we'll say more when we've got the results back but the initial response I've received is that what the report contains is "typically what one would find to expect in such a location".

The council will be looking at strengthening the fence which keeps on being vandalised.

We've also had some very positive interest from Radio Humberside who are looking at the possibility of doing a feature, possible as an outside broadcast, from the site before our next meeting. Details of when this will be taking place will be posted here and on the Face book group:

Please, once again use the links below to download, print and distribute notices about the meeting, lets try to get as many people there as possible.

We've also had a lot of support from the Keep Scunthorpe Alive campaign who have agreed to help promote the campaign and put up some posters for us. Please, return the favor by visiting their web site and helping them with their very important campaign:

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
