Armed Forces Flag Raising Ceremony

To mark the start of the National Armed Forces Day there has been a Raising the Flag ceremony held in Central Park close to Pittwood House this morning, 20th June 2011. The Armed Forces Day flag was raised to mark the start of a week of celebrations to coincide with ceremonies taking place across the UK.

The event started off at 10.15am with a parade through Central Park led by the ATC Band followed by the flag being raised at 10.30am.The mayor of North Lincolnshire, Cllr Keith Vickers lead the service by welcoming everyone to the ceremony who included local MPs, councilors, members of the Scunthorpe Armed Veterans, cadets along with children from Bushfield Road Infant School, St. Hugh’s school and Brumby Junior school.


He went on to say,

“Today’s raising of the flag marks the start of a week’s long celebration culminating this Saturday, 25th June, at an event to be held at Holme Meadow Recreation Field, Messingham.”


Prayers were then led by Father David Rowett prior to the National Anthem being played by the ATC band as the Association Standards were lowered and the union flag raised by the mayor. The Chief Executive of North Lincolnshire Council, Simon Driver, then took to the podium to echo the words of the mayor an to invite everyone along to the Armed forces day event at Messingham on Saturday

Attractions at this years Armed Forces Day include military exhibits, a typhoon fighter simulator, numerous displays, stalls and shows as well as a fly past by a Lancaster from the Battle of Britain memorial flight and also the Red Arrows as the fly over as the head back to Scampton from the national event in Edinburgh.
