Anti cuts meeting

28 May 2011 by Paul Rhoades

This Tuesday at 7:30 there will be a meeting of the Coalition of Resistance to plan and organise resistance to the cuts in Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire. Tuesday's meeting is intended to help organisers plan for the public meeting on the 24th June, and will focus on how the group can build public awareness of the forthcoming meeting. Any one interested in helping out should attend the meeting at 7:30 at the highfield house pub in Scunthorpe

Hopefully top of the agenda will be protests and organised opposition to the Tory death of democracy.

Get your self down there then Glad (besides it would be nice to meet you finally!!)

I'm going and Martin (the organiser) has circulated a press release I sent him to members of the CoR mailing list.

I just want to avoid "hijacking" a meeting about financial cuts, and introducing this issue; but as I pointed out to CoR members, the reduction in council meetings does effectively mute protest groups by removing opportunities for them to lobby the council etc.

I believe it's going in to AOB.

Where do the protest groups expect the money to come from to pay for services we cannot afford?
Money has to be saved ,Brown  made sure of that ,nobody wants jobs to go , the council have made a massive error cutting meetings and not slashing expenses deeper in my opinion but even that would not hide the fact money has to be saved.
Would they for instance accept pay cuts?
Most people I know in none public jobs are  being paid about 3k less in actual pay, most public employees to show a pay cut have to take into account inflation,as their salary has in fact still gone up just not as much as inflation.Nobody wants people out of work but what is the alternative?,borrowing money to pay them every year is just a none starter
I would like a serious and costed  answer as I can't see any way we can pay to keep people in public service jobs when the private sector is not providing enough cash to fund them

I wrote this article in march 2011 suggesting that if the government did not bail out failed economies, collected tax properly and didn't give massive tax breaks to multinational companies there would be no need to cut.

You might prefer this one from June last year though as I slag off Gordon Brown in it a little bit...

I've read these articles and basically they have several flaws.

There are many arguments whether the banks that over invested in dodgy sub prime mortgages or repackaged investments based on them should have been allowed to fail. The fact of the matter is the state already guarantees the money in people's bank accounts up to 50K, so by “nationalising” the banks we have avoided a crash and acquired an asset (not a debt).

The yearly UK budget shows that we spend more on public services and welfare than we can raise in tax from our productive (private) economy. We are basically spending more than we can afford. Close down the tax loopholes says Paul but higher rate tax payers find the principle of paying more tax unfair and will always find new ways of avoiding it or will change their circumstances to mitigate its unfairness. He also takes no account of the fact that higher taxes can be a disincentive to be “more productive”. I my self have taken March off and gone on holiday rather than earn the money that pushes me into the higher rate tax band.

With economic globalisation being the norm I can’t see how you can nail down multinational companies to pay corporation tax in a specific country. Boots for example doesn’t just have UK stores but is a European wide pharmaceuticals manufacturer. I see no problem with Boots or any other corporation basing themselves in other countries than the UK to take advantage of cheaper tax regimes. The sooner we adopt a low-rate flat corporation tax the better so we can attract foreign investment to our shores. If we reduced our higher rate personal taxes we would re-attract those foreigners who have left our shores to spend their money somewhere else.

The labour and socialist green movements fail to understand you have to make the money before you can spend it. They also fail to recognise that government spending is the most inefficient spending because it isn’t their money so they don’t spend it wisely. We should stop taxing the incomes of the UK public and let them spend their money as they see fit - using the power of the market to get cheaper healthcare, education, social insurance and housing. We need less taxes, less government spending and more personal freedom.

Those on low incomes who are struggling already will struggle more, where as big businesses and the top 10% continue to get richer. This has always been the case, regardless as to who run's the country.

My personal view is that we should help those who are worse off than our selves, not grind them down further. I think society in general has lost sight of its moral compass and we are all far too interested in our own lives, what we have and have not got, and what others have and have not got, to care with any real compassion for others.

The following article on Child Poverty in North Lincolnshire explores (scratches the surface really!!) just a few of these issues http://www.visitscunthorpe.com/ScunthorpeNews/Headline/Child-Poverty-in-North-Lincolnshire certainly it opened my eyes massively when researching it.

Hi Black Flag.

I can see you pasted your response in from Office, had a couple of issues with this on the new editor. Could you let me know what version of office your source document was in and what browser your posting in to. we've got a new version ready to go which should stop this problem.

Cheers
P.
