Woodland Saved

04 April 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Ancient woodland at Broughton which borders the boundary of Scunthorpe has been saved from redevelopment by the Forest Pines Hotel and Golf resort. In a joint campaign by both the Woodlands Trust and the Friends Of The Earth (North Lincolnshire) a successful defence against the development was made at appeal to the local council. North Lincolnshire Council had previously turned down the planned development by the Forest Pines, who clearly think that they knew better than the rest of us as to what was good for our native woodland. Stupidly the Forest Pines have now cost local tax payers even more of our hard earned money by attempting to overturn the original decision and launching an appeal against the council's original decision. Thankfully due to the generosity of the public, local F.O.E. Campaigners and a campaign by the Woodlands Trust on their web site, the forest pines have been prevented from destroying what would have been 10% of the local native woodland in North Lincolnshire. It's good to see for once, big business's objectives being put to one side in favour of local concerns over the environment and the quality of life for local residents. Essentially the only people who would benefit would be a minority of local golfer's who can still afford forest pine's membership fees and other people from outside of the area. Why should we tolerate the destruction of our environment for the benefit of others?

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
