Winter measures announced

13 September 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following its review of measures to combat the severe weather we experienced last year, the council has today announced its plans to help combat similar problems this year should they occur.

Measures include:
  • The use of Quad Bikes in pedestrian areas
  • "Snow Blowers" to blow snow off paths
  • Additional Salt Bins to be made available in the community
  • Increased reserves of salt to be stockpiled
  • Increase in the number of Gritter Drivers
  • Improved information to road users including warning signs on the A15
  • Increase emphasis on strategic routes and bus routes

In addition to this, a "snow warden" scheme is also being considered where the situation can be monitored at a local level and reported back to a central control room.

In a statement released today on the council's web site, Cllr Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhoods, said:

“Since the bad weather last year we have undertook a full review of our winter service and have carried out significant consultations with all parties to ensure we have a robust winter plan for this coming season.

“Last winter was unprecedented.  We had to deal with arctic temperatures and all the problems that resulted from that.

“I wanted to ensure that this year we are better prepared should we have a repeat of last winter.  I hope we don’t, but at least we are fully prepared.

“Key to that was finding out what people thought of the current service.  So we have consulted widely and we have listened.

“We are investing more money to enable us to introduce a raft of improvements that will ensure we respond much more efficiently and I welcome this.”

Doh! - Quadbikes? I'm sure lots of us have got a few of them a-piece kicking around

Doh! - Gritter Drivers is nice but I think Gritters would be better - AND using the plough part of snow-plough would be handy. I lost count of the numbr of times I followed a snow plough last winter that wasn't doing the thing snow ploughs were made for - PLOUGHING.

Doh! - Let farmers help in rural areas - and could someone tell me the point of spending £1000 clearing the snow from Messingham Village Hall but not clearing the entry roads on the grounds of Health n Lunacy?

Doh!! Snow blowers ??? Health n Shifty doesn't allow council employees to walk on snow - and that includes traffic wardens.... this is a good thing

Personally I'm looking forward to another good dumping of snow - the combination of a good clearance 4x4 and a Victor Meldrew mentality is a wonderful thing.
