Why Involve Hull?

19 July 2010 by Hamst

The recent announcement by Able UK to build a 400 million 1,600-metre quay and 320-hectare Marine Energy Park on the South Humber Bank is without doubt welcome news. So too are the proposed 5,100 onsite jobs, many of which would be highly-skilled, as well as another 5,100 across the region and more than 2,000 throughout the country. Its said the scheme could also lead to more than 10,000 further indirect jobs becoming available. Its certainly a major boost to the region, the scale of investment has been likened to when Nissan moved into Sunderland in the 1980s. The project, if it goes ahead, will transform the area's economic prospects and suposedly put the Humber at the centre of the UK's offshore wind industry, manufacturing and supplying turbines to giant wind farm projects which are due to be established in British North Sea coastal waters between 2014 and 2020 and its said it will make North Lincolnshire the renewable energy capital of Europe. As much as Id like to see as many people as possible pulling in the same direction trying to make this happen I do reserve a touch of cynicism at the news that North Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Mark Kirk has met with Hull MPs Alan Johnson and Karl Turner, along with MPs Nic Dakin and Austin Mitchell, to brief them on two key developments to transform the Humber area. Cllr Kirk has said that Hull will benefit from these developments. Like I mentioned, the more leading figures, be it MPs, MEPs and Councilors, we have singing from the same hymn sheet on this one the better. Does North Lincolshire Council really need to involve Hull? For years, under the former County of Humberside, taxpayers on the South Bank saw millions of pounds of what was perceived to be their money being spent on the North Bank, add too the millions of pounds of inward private investment that went to Hull. Did any of the Councilors from the North Bank consider involving their counterparts across the Humber? Many people rejoiced when the County of Humberside was abolished in 1996 hoping that would cut any permanent ties we had with Hull and that money destined for our region would stay on the South Bank. Do we really need to let the North Bank have a share of the spoils?

I couldn't agree more, why even after the ill fated authority was laid to rest do we still have to pay homage to the northern leeches. Why do we still have to have a Humberside Police force surely we are able to align with the Lincolnshire force. There is talk in the ST that local leaders and businesses should create a organisation to replace Yorkshire Forward and cut the ties with the north and Midlands almost making it a old Lincolnshire county sized group and why not. All to often in the past have we seen the northern drain on the Humberside wealth come up with harebrained schemes to promote the North when all the good has come from the South, look at the Humberside airport fiasco calling it Humberside Hull Airport, we had people driving over the bridge to Hull only to find its on the South bank. As for the Bridge I'm in two mind whether we should put the Tolls up that high no-one will use it (almost there now) or to do as the campaigners want and scrap it, but again we only have to look how the South faired with that deal, come off the Bridge in the north and you can drive north, east or west, come off in the South and you can only go east or west, once you have driven south to the M180, there should have been a new major road taking traffic south from there years ago but all the money was spent up north, look at the only (cant say decent)route south until you get to the Pennines the A15, a road that has been crying out to be made into a dual carriageway for 50 years but no lets spent the money up north. Looks like the little bit of a job that needed to be done to the A180 Immingham interchange (sorely needed if this windfarm project gets going) is now been put on hold. The amount of traffic that will be heading this way will be vast, if not bringing raw materials in, then bringing part built turbines in, the numbers quoted to be built by the deadlines will mean almost 30 turbines a week will need to be shipped out, 3 to 4 a day and when you see the size of these that is some tonnage to be moved into the area. This dockland expansion scheme is an attempt to entice the turbine companies into the area and build and ship out from the south bank so why do we need NLC minions nipping to see the northern leeches, would it have anything to do with them having similar Liebour tendencies up there, are NLC feeling a little out in the political wilderness down here in the wealth generating south. Weatlh generating we are, as well as Corus now making a shilling or two again there plans to build a Bio-Diesel plant, a Bio-petrol plant, a Bio-fuel electricity station as well as all the service industries needed for the Turbines, all down here in the south. Seeing as I mentioned the Airport earlier, I know that there are plans for a Hotel on site but if all this expansion is going ahead the the airport needs to expand its flights package and services.
