Whens a saving not a saving?

23 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

When its a reduction in fuel from George Osbourn! Todays budget simply had to include something for the poor motorists, and the transport industry. Fuel prices are at an all time high, and war and civil unrest in the oil states looks certain to push prices even higher. Faced with the threat of fuel protests similar to those in 2001 this was another challenge the government simply could not afford to face. With thousands taking to the streets around the country this weekend the Chancellor was faced to act. However, looking at the stipends which have been fed us, its all too easy to believe that weve been given something for nothing. This is not the case. The increase in VAT added 5p a litre to petrol (according the the AA), 1 p off at the pumps tonight will reduce that increase to 4p. Far fairer would be to reduce VAT to its previous level and to invest more money in Customs and Excise so that can actually collect the billions outstanding in unpaid and avoided corporate tax. An increase in basic allowance? Well thats worth 328 to an average income. Where as the increase in VAT youve been paying since January will cost you on average 350 Done the maths yet? Yes you are worse off again. Feel that this is unfair, unjust? Did you loose 850 Billion by getting your bank in to trouble doing high risk deals? Probably not. Are you still paying for the bankers mistakes? Yes There is an alternative, march for the alternative, 26th March Central London, or 12pm in Church Square Scunthorpe. Visit Scunthorpe will be covering both.

Danny Alexander announced a 2bn windfall tax on North Sea oil producers, to pay for a fuel duty cut but on the BBC's Newsnight he couldn't realy give a plausible guarantee oil firms might recoup this through higher pump prices, he used the argument suggesting it was "complete nonsense" because the North Sea oil companies were entirely separate from those selling fuel at the pumps who have access to a competitive global oil market. Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
