Visit Scunthorpe People's Gallery

07 August 2012 by Scunny Independent News

Last night the Baths Hall hosted the successful launch of the Visit Scunthorpe Community Gallery.

Consisting of 32 photographs taken in and around North Lincolnshire the gallery tells the story of Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire both past and present.

Taken by 19 different contributors, using a range of cameras from mobile phones, to the latest professional SLRs, the gallery shows North Lincolnshire in all its fabulous diversity.

Curated by Visit Scunthorpe's founders, from submissions made by members in April and May of this year, the gallery aims not only to capture the very essence of community spirit in the town, but to also tell the story of how the town and the region have moved from being an agricultural, rural economy in the 1850's to being the steel giant it is today, paying homage to its workers, skills and engineering prowess along the way.

We are so very proud of the fantastic photos submitted by the community, and feel that this really illustrates just how much the people of North Lincolnshire care about their region and the town of Scunthorpe.

The gallery will be open daily from 10:30 to 4pm Monday to Friday until October, at which point it will be replaced by a gallery by Scunthorpe Telegraph's professional photographer Carl Gac.

VSGallery

Any one who is resident in North Lincolnshire can contribute to next year's Visit Scunthorpe gallery, and to make it more inclusive, we're starting collecting photo's now! Each month for the next 10 months we will be publishing a "Photo theme" on our facebook group. We want members of the public to submit us photographs based around this theme, and each month we'll select 3 photos for inclusion in the principal gallery, along with several others for our smaller "community collages" which feature in this year's collection.

We believe that events such as this should be inclusive, and encourage any one who shares and interest or love for the town to contribute whether its be with a professional camera or mobile phone.

This month's theme will run untill the first week in September and is "Recreation". The only rule is the photograph must be taken in North Lincolnshire.

This year's photo contributions are from:
Alison walker smith

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
