Unions Slam Tory Budget

02 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Earlier today North Lincolnshire's three biggest unions issued a press release condemning the "alternative" Tory budget proposed at last week's council meeting. We are given to understand that representatives from Unison, Unite and GMB trade unions have notified their membership explaining how damaging the Tory budget would be if come may it is implemented. The Conservative budget includes proposals to make at least 2,000 people redundant without any form of consultation, close two childrens homes and all leisure centres would be sold off to a third party. Branch Secretary of Unison, Mervyn White, said: "The proposals, hidden away as 'additional staffing savings' in the Tory budget, could have a huge impact on the way even basic services are delivered. They would have a catastrophic impact on North Lincolnshire". "There are major cuts in every single service from adult care to leisure, human resources to neighbourhood and environment. If these proposals are all implemented there would be a significantly higher number of posts which would have to be deleted, possibly up to three times as many as those already proposed". Unison, Unite and the GMB have today written a joint letter which will be distributed to members informing them of the cuts the Tories plan to make. Cllr Mark Kirk and the councils Chief Executive have ensured we have been fully briefed throughout the last few months so we know exactly what will happen as long as the ruling Labour group retain control. All trade union members need to be aware of what could happen should this not happen in Mays election." Trevor Davey, secretary of the councils GMB branch, said: "You cannot just dump 2,000 families on the dole and expect no consequences. GMB members need to know exactly what will happen should the Conservatives get the opportunity to enforce their budget". "Thousands of council staff would lose their jobs under this proposal. Leisure centres could shut. Cares homes for some of our most vulnerable children will shut. Will bins get collected? Will roads be repaired? Who will deliver the basic services we all rely on?" Regional Officer for Unite trade union members at North Lincolnshire Council, Dave Monaghan, added: "There has been no consultation between the Tories and the trade unions. The first we heard about these cuts was through the grapevine after last weeks meeting. No-one has had the decency to brief us on the plans". "This isnt about saving money and balancing the books, its an ideological attack on public services - basic public services which we all rely on".

I agree that the Tory alternative budget would be a disaster if it passed, and that the ConDem government are on an ideological crusade to redistribute wealth from the poor to the rich. However, I fear that the Trade Unions are so frightened of the tories getting a majority on the council in may that they are letting the current Labour council get away cutting jobs and services without a fight.

Martin, A fair point which I would accept. But if you have 15m of cuts to make, where would you make them? I don't accept that not making cuts and sticking it to the man is the right way to go about things as that hands all power to a council's Chief Finance Officer who potentially could do more damage than any political party. I'd be interested to hear where you think cuts could be made.

I think that by making the cuts, the council is accepting that the Tory logic is correct. if there are savings to be made (through cutting senior management positions or whatever) thats fine but the money the council gets should stay the same and be spent on services. If we accept the realpolitik argument that 'there is no alternative' we see year on year cuts to our services and back door privatisation. So my answer is set a 'needs' budget that can deliver services to local people, build a local campaign and see how it goes! Any other way legitimises the Tory cuts agenda. Real Labour Party heros stood tall and found principles in the past (think Poplar and Liverpool coincillors).

'See how it goes' - so in other words you don't have an alternative then!

I have srticulated an alternative. I'll admit that it is one that could have a number of outcomes which is why i said 'see how it goes', but I am convinced that imposing year on year cuts to services against every instinct of the labour councillors is the wrong way to go. It is an ideological attack that i believe requires and ideological response from councils and unions alike. Can I please make it clear at this point that any comments I make or have made on this site or elsewhere, unless otherwise stated, are my own opinions.
