UK Riots - Public Debate

16 August 2011 by Paul Rhoades

We've had a couple of articles on Visit Scunthorpe discussing (some what academically) the unrest which has been seen in recent week in some of the big cities carried out by gangs of youths.

Firstly, local Blogger Gary Day shared his thoughts on the riots by kindly "lending" one of his articles to Visit Scunthorpe which highlighted the damage which this kind of behaviour inflicts on the community

I made a contribution of my own specifically about the violent dissorder in Tottenham asking people to think about what may have caused this anti social behavior and also refering the the severe child poverty there is in the Tottenham borough, and the benefits of community based policing

We also received another view on the disorder from another poster giving their views, not one which I personally agree with but a worthwhile contribution from a Visit Scunthorpe regular so mentioned none the less:

I've also seen that Gary has done a follow up article on his blog discussing the disproportional nature of some of the sentences being handed out to those found guilty:

The final piece of local commentary on the civil disorder which has taken place comes from Labour Councillor Mick Grant via his blog:

So it would seem that there is a fair amount of interest in these matters in the community, and rightly so. Our own council and police have done lots to tackle both poverty and antisocial behavior in our area, and to be honest, especially with regards to the respect program for young first time offenders, there are probably lessons that could be learned by other police forces.

Should any one wish to form part of a public debate on this then subject then (provisionally) next Wednesday, there will be a public meeting organised by the North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance Against the Cuts. The meeting will feature guest speakers and will discuss the different views on the riots from within the cuts movement.

When we get more details we'll post them up here, including confirmed times, venues and speakers.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
