Town centre managers� group meets in Scunthorpe

Town centre managers from across the North East and the Yorkshire and Humber region met in Scunthorpe yesterday, 15th October 2010. They came together here to share ideas for improving the region�s town centres and helping High Streets turnaround after the economic downturn. Members of the Association of Town Centre Managers meet quarterly at different locations across the region they cover and this was the first time they have met in Scunthorpe. Town centres across the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside face similar challenges and the association looks at different tactics to make improvements. Many shops now open on Sundays to entice shoppers into the town centre for a more relaxed shopping experience. Scunthorpe Town Centre 10th October 2010 on Twitpic Various shops open on Sundays Over the past couple of years Scunthorpe town centre has seen many changes with the closure of shops such as Blockbuster, Woolworths and the future closure of Marks and Spencer, but now we�re seeing positive signs with retail giants including Primark and British Home Stores(BHS) showing their commitment to the town. Indeed BHS opened the doors to their new store today (14th October 2010)whilst the new Primark store is currently undergoing conversion. A recent report revealed close to a fifth of the 284 shops in Scunthorpe town centre were stood empty. The survey by the Local Data Company shows the number of empty stores increased by more than three per cent to 18.37 per cent in the first half of the year. Showing numerous toLet Boards Just recently it was announced that a joint initiative between North Lincolnshire Council and local estate agents that empty shops in Scunthorpe town centre are to be given stylish make overs in a bid to bring in more shoppers and retailers. Initially, five shops in Scunthorpe will be given make- overs � but more will follow in the run-up to Christmas. The two-hour meeting of the Members of the Association of Town Centre Managers took place at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Church Square.
