ToryNLC will be held to account one way or another

25 July 2011 by GaryDay2011

The following has been published elsewhere today but I thought it may be of interest to others through my blog and VisScun as well.

"Someone asked me recently – how would you describe the way that your Council works, I replied:

PITWOOD HOUSE 2

My Conservative led North Lincolnshire Council, got elected, took control, have and continue to implement undeclared policies whilst successfully manufacturing a system that makes them near unaccountable to their electorate, while all the time looking for ways to devolve themselves of any direct responsibility and accountability for essential day to day services.

By carrying on in this manner they’ve implemented their intransigent belief all things good and great are done through private enterprise and that anything that the public sector touches is tainted as overpriced, delivered late and of sub-standard in quality.  This Council have continued with one solitary aim, to privatise as much as they can of the services it has responsibility for irrelevant of any moral or humanitarian obligation they may have to the local electorate and the most vulnerable within its county’s borders.

What they’re doing is extremely clever because as time goes on and the more they devolve, the less responsibility this Conservative led Council will have and the less accountable they will continue to become either legally or morally."

Others will read this and have different views, of that I have no doubt.  That is their right as I have mine.  Either way whatever view a person takes, all must agree that come the current Conservative led North Lincolnshire Council's end of term in office they will be held to account for what they have and haven't done whilst in control.

What have they privatised so far?
The 1st paragraph  is so easy to make fit for any party.
There is certainly a belief in Tory towers that some things are done better by private enterprises but as we see with the utility companies which the Tories sold off,it is not always for the good of the consumer. There is nothing to prevent certain council run establishments being run by Private enterprise,it was Labour who farmed out the Baths to private enterprise for instance at a ridiculous cost I might add.
In my opinion though there should always be the provision of care by the authorities for those in need and incapable of providing for themselves, this should never be farmed out to private contractors, just like provision for meals on wheels should always be provided by those who also provide that little bit of comfort and company ,the WRVS
Labour have gladly given away the collection of waste to private contractors with none of the squealing we constantly hear from their supporters when the Tories do it. and we have all heard horror stories about militant and whining bin men refusing to collect a wheel bin deemed a little heavy despite it being wheel to the front be a frail old lady.
One other question,is the green waste plant a private or public fiasco? Who made the catastrophic error in getting the wrong kind of composting plant which left us unable to even compost potato peeling?
By the way I do not have the answer to the above questions, they are genuine question not rhetorical.

Hallelujah, at last! By raising the fact that it was NLC Labour group that got in well before the local elections to privatise and contract out the running of the Baths to American outfit SMG for 15 years!! at an initial cost of £475K per annum. (If I recall correctly, from the conservative group\'s review of that contract, I believe they negotiated a reduction of £30K? But I stand to be corrected!) At least others are at last picking up on the contradictions, double standards and hypocrisy behind much of the politicking AND the perceived sour grapes from certain of Scunny\'s misguided and disgruntled politicos. Whatever their political control, councils will be be unaccountable. More so when so called local community leaders and representatives (many of them handsomely remunerated over many years in opposition or otherwise by council tax payers) and local politicos fail to attend crucial meetings and/or get off the sidelines to actually ask the questions and challenge the opposition! Perhaps if these people equally got off their backsides and tried asking the relevant questions, arguing and presenting the case from the relevant council officials and others. Questions such as: Why the council accepted the public petition but yet needs to reconsult over Scotter House? What are the unique issues and circumstances for Scotter compared to the Lilacs facility? What are the council\'s intention and goals regarding the standards and level of service and much needed improvements in the facility and care provided by Scotter House? What exactly are the council\'s future plans? Only by having any backbone and morality to stand up and be counted to get at the answers; will any of us ever be able to hold these people to their word and pledges. AND to hold them accountable if they don\'t stick to those stated plans and meet their pledges of standards and improvements in services etc.
