Tories Plan Emergency Budget

09 May 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Having been elected to run the council at last week's elections, we can exclusively reveal that the new leading Conservative Group are planning to release an "Emergency Budget" shortly. We are also led to believe that there will be some sort of discussion regarding who takes leadership and control of the group. Speaking to Andrew Percy (Brigg and Goole MP last night), Andrew told Visit Scunthorpe "I met with Liz yesterday and the first few days will be sorting out the basics as she isn't actually Leader until we have the AGM of the Council" Clearly there is some debate going on internally amongst the Tory faithful as to who should be the leader of the party now they have come to power; Should Liz Redfern continue having spent the last 4 years in opposition? Certainly Liz's tenure as Tory leader has been a turbulent one, we've seen the defection of two Tories to become cross bench Independents, with several viable candidates including election agent Rob Waltham (who has not been a councillor here for long, but served in Melton Mobray for several years prior to coming to Scunthorpe). Andrew also went on to tell us that in his opinion the Labour Budget was "unacceptable", and that he would expect an emergency budget to be published very quickly. Andrew indicated that the formation and publication of any new budget would be down to the local Tory group to decide. We also questioned Andrew about two disturbances outside Centenary Church Polling Station on Thursday, reported by various members of the public to Visit Scunthorpe. Two different sources have alleged to Visit Scunthorpe members that a group of youths, surrounding one of the Conservative Candidates stood close to the door chanting "Vote Tory! Vote Tory!" while polling was under way on Thursday Morning. We were sent a photograph showing one of the candidates with some youths standing outside the station by a reader. Commenting on this Andrew said "As for the chanting outside polling stations. I', not sure what happened but if there have been any breaches of the rules they must be reported to the Returning Officer" Clearly as Visit Scunthorpe has only received this information 2nd hand, then we would encourage any one who witnessed this activity to get in touch with the Returning Officer Simon Driver at the council and make him aware. The next general meeting of the council will be on Wednesday 25th May at 10:00 am, the venue has yet to be published. This Wednesday there will be a meeting of the Coalition of Resistance to discuss the potential for cuts at 7:30 at Highfield House, Francis Street, all are welcome to attend.

I want to see details. really small details. if they are cutting 100k from one dept. to give to another dept. i want to know why. we really need to take this council to task and demand as much transparency as we can get. i will not be happy with the big figures that Labour trotted out. knowing the bigs numbers going in and out does not explain reasons why some things are cut and others are not. now we are stuck with the tories leading/controling the purse strings, so its time to make them open up to the public and really explain why, what and when with any and all cuts. I doubt a labour controlled council would do much better. i would have rather seen no control to either party with a couple of independents on the council but now we are stuck with red on one side and blue on the other. we need to ask questions now so when they publish the results of this budget we can see if the answers match what they say and what they do. oh and im going to annoy, for an extended period of time, with emails and comments the first NLC member that utters the words "fair for everyone" on the record, because its a lie. It is immposible to make something fair for everyone, as fairness is a point of view and we all have different points of view.
