Tit for Tat Politics

07 April 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Following on from the revelations on Visit Scunthorpe yesterday regarding a complaint to Humberside Police concerning 13 Conservative Candidates and their Agent, we have more news about the shocking behaviour of our wannabe councillors in the run up to the election. At the last council meeting, members of the public witnessed an outrageous attack by councillor Trevor Foster on councillor O'Sullivan branding her a liar, an attack which resulted in his being banned from speaking for the rest of the meeting. This unbecoming and outrageous behaviour clearly set the bench mark for what to expect in the forthcoming election campaign. It came as no surprise when yesterday the returning officer reviewed the Conservative literature and decided to inform the police of what he felt was a breach under the representation of the people act 1974. As the police are now formally investigating this matter further comments are disabled on the original article, and we'd ask readers to refrain from further comment on this particular issue. However, in an interesting turn of event's last night, Andrew Percy (Local Tory MP) seemed to drag him self into the argument via twitter. This in its self is interesting as it would appear that the person responsible for producing the leaflet (Rob Waltham) was also Andrew Percy's agent. Cllr Waltham became a councillor in North Lincolnshire in 2007 having previously served in Melton Mowbray as a councillor there. Last night Andrew Percy posted on twitter "Tut tut North Lincs Labour Councillors in trouble for using Council Offices address on party political letters." Looking into his statement further, Visit Scunthorpe can reveal that the Conservative group made a complaint yesterday to the Returning Officer stating that Labour had used Pittwood House as the address on a letter sent to residents. Visit Scunthorpe understands the letter was clearly dated before the election was called and therefore was dismissed by the Returning Officer. We can therefore surmise that there is no suggestion anyone "is in trouble" as the Tweet stated. It is encouraging to see MP's getting them selves involved in the local elections, especially as the house is now in recess; but, its some what disheartening to see that Mr Percy's involvement to date is little more constructive than poring oil on troubled waters. We would have hoped that some one as vocal as Mr Percy would be helping conduct the Conservative campaign in a more constructive manner, as opposed to trying to take cheap shots at this opponents which on the face of it lack little substance. Rather hilariously though, its just been pointed out to me that the Conservatives have used the council offices address on their literature which is exactly the sort of thing that Andrew Percy was complaining about last night: See, its even got a nice pic of him on it.

All this does take the limelight away from today's big local political news eh? "good day to bury bad news" in Labour Parlance?

Can't comment on what you're talking about Fans as its ongoing. ET have a brief story on their site, they are trained journalists and have a legal department, we are not and don't have so we'll not touching it for that reason. Also should point out that any comments regarding that will be delete for the very same reason. like wise, with yesterday's story as that's now ongoing so any comments on that will have to be deleted. Go to err on the side of caution, sorry :(

The comments were made, to the best of my knowledge before it was acknowledged by the police that there was an enquiry, however if we are advised otherwise I'll take them down.

Fans has hit the nail firmly and squarely on the head. What a farcical pantomime; clumsy and embarassing political stunt this is all turning out to be. And yet many still believe that it has to be in North Lincolnshire's and Scunthorpe's best interests; for the dubious intellect, calibre and integrity of certain of Scunthorpe's "political mafiose of muckers, minders" to hang onto control of NLC? At what cost to the area's image and reputation and for it to be able to attract and compete for the influx of investors, developers and newcomers to reinvent and reinvigorate the local economy?!
