Thieves Steal Benches

01 June 2011 by Hamst

North Lincolnshire Council have revealed that 5 out of seven brand new benches put in place as part of Central Park’s makeover have been stolen.

Work has been ongoing to rejuvenate Central Park along with Festival Gardens and Queens Garden which border Ashby Road. The £2m regeneration of Central Park, which was supposed to have been complete by the summer of 2010, has seen;

  • New £450,000 children's play area
  • Pavilion and street furniture constructed by special steel material called Coreten
  • Boulevard through the park that links up the entrance to the park and The Pods to the colleges
  • Refurbished fountain
  • Events area with open air amphitheatre to hold low key music and theatrical events, built using excavated soil from The Pods.

Festival Gardens, which this year celebrates it's 60th anniversary, has also been undergoing a  make over and has seen shrubbery and hedges cut back and old benches replaced with new. North Lincolnshire Council had installed the new benches two weeks ago, they were bolted to the ground, but it didn’t stop the thieves.  As a result, the remaining two benches have been removed and the council are undecided whether to replace them.

Anyone with any information about the stolen benches is asked to contact Humberside police.

why do they remove the remaining two when it was obvious the thieves wee returning?
Surely video and police watching them would have meant a chance of catching the thieves?
