The Lighthouse Wins Regional Award

22 November 2011 by Hamst

Scunthorpe resident Dave Wooldridge has been named the winner of the TalkTalk Digital Heroes Award for Yorkshire & Humberside for his role in using digital technology to help others.

Dave received the most votes in Yorkshire & Humberside and has joined 11 other regional winners hoping to be crowned TalkTalk’s national Digit...al Heroes Awards 2011 winner at an event held on Thursday 24th November at the House of Lords.

As well as winning a technology grant of £5,000 to enhance his digital project, Dave is now in with a chance of winning the grand prize of £10,000, which is judged by a panel that includes dotcom entrepreneur and UK Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox, and TalkTalk Chairman Charles Dunstone.

Dave is the manager of The Lighthouse, a homeless hostel in Scunthorpe, which has been run by New Life Church for four years and is making a significant impact on the lives of the community. The Lighthouse Supported Housing Facility has temporarily housed over 150 people per year of operation. The people they have helped include young people, victims of domestic violence, recovering addicts and those with mental health problems.

The Lighthouse also includes an adjacent Life Skills Centre that helps clients to develop basic life skills. It is also a UK online centre that helps many people each month use computers for the first time. The grant will allow him to carry out refurbishment at The Lighthouse and the Life Skills Centre, replace equipment that is out of date, and to develop more training courses.

Dave Wooldridge from The Lighthouse said: “I’m absolutely delighted to win a Digital Heroes Awards. The £5,000 grant will make a huge difference at The Lighthouse Life Skills Centre and will enable us to help so many more people. Winning next week’s national award would be the icing on an already hugely appreciated cake and a real encouragement to our team. I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted for me and for the continued support of the New Life family.”

Dido Harding, TalkTalk CEO, said: “We would like to congratulate Dave, as well as our other 11 regional winners. The Digital Heroes Awards was designed to recognise and reward those who use digital technology to make a difference in their communities. We’ve seen some incredibly worthy causes and we are delighted that these projects are getting the recognition they fully deserve.”

The TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards, run in conjunction with Citizens Online, is the only awards of its kind to celebrate inspirational people who are using digital technology to bring about positive social change.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
