As of 1st October 2011 toll for crossing the Humber Bridge increased for all vehicles, a car is now charged £3 per crossing, a rise of 30p. The bridge is now the most costly toll crossing in Britain at £6 for a return journey, compared to £5.50 for next most expensive, the Severn Bridge.
The Humber Bridge is a 2,220 m (7,283 ft) single-span suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on 24 June 1981 and was hoped wold bring together businesses and improve trade from both sides of the River Humber, however the increasing tolls now act more as a barrier to commerce. At a time when the local economy needs all the help it can get it seems that the rise in bridge tolls is a kick in the teeth. MP’s and councillors from all the surrounding constituencies have raised concerns the increase would have on industry.
The Bridge Board is made up of 22 members who are councillors from each side of the Humber bank and it is they who know how crippling the tolls can be. The Vice Chairman of the Bridge Board is North Lincolnshire Councillor and Mayor Keith Vickers (Pictured Left), he seconded a motion asking for a rise in the tolls knowing the damaging effect it would have on the South Bank economy, an economy which he as Mayor should be helping in every way he can. It really does make a mockery when he’s pictured in the local paper standing with local business people when in reality he has stabbed them in the back when voting in favour of the tolls increase.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.
Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute
independently with articles of their own.
You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.
Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Talk about own goals.I suppose as a board member he had to make a financial and unemotional choice that surely cannot be compatible with his positon on a council.Typical of his sort, they just have to be on committees no matter how stupid ut makes them look. Was he annointed mayor by mad Lizzie?Reply Report
