TUC Day of Action 26th March

27 February 2011 by Paul Rhoades

With less than a month to go, interest is building locally in the TUC called demonstration against the cuts. Most vocal locally is the North Lincolnshire Coalition of Resistance, which is a loosely formed group of activists from a range of political parties, trade unions and other none governmental organisations who have pledged to work together to help the community and oppose central cuts. At the council meeting on the 26th we saw a demonstration by around 40 people from the CoR, Trade Unions, Young Labour and also workers from the Lilac's who's jobs are under threat. Demonstrators at Pitwood House Scunthorpe, 23/2/11 CoR are focusing on putting across an alternative message to the public which is not carried by the main stream media, due to their own interests in maintaining the status quoe and the benefits it reaps. CoR argue that if the exchequer was correctly staffed and resourced it could address the 26Bn tax revenue which is uncollected every year. CoR also want to highlight how large corporations have been avoiding paying their share of tax through a series of loop holes which if closed, would make the system fairer for all. It is estimated that each year between 50Bn and 120Bn worth of income is missing from the revenue's income due to these practices. Other strategies suggested by CoR and its affiliates include a one off financial transaction tax of 0.5% which would generate an income of 20Bn in a year, and the scrapping of the 76Bn Trident program. 1.3Trillion was spent bailing out the banks, you the British tax payer now has a 850Bn share in the semi nationalised institutions but are seeing nothing other than suffering for your "investment". It's these very same banks however which are still paying over inflated bonuses to their staff before settling up with the tax payer, and improving the quality of every one's life, not just the privileged few. Its this fact alone which has infuriated so many people around the country; being told by David Cameron that we are in this together, so VAT must increase and Services be Cut. Yet we see in the press the chief executive of RBS only last week announced a 1.3Bn loss, yet taking a 2Bn bonus him self while the rest of us struggle. Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
