Stupid Party prove them selves again

13 July 2011 by Paul Rhoades

The stupidity of the Tories is something which does not normally surprise me, I’ve come to expect their moral indignation, holier than thou attitude and supercilious nature over the years. I’ve also learned to hack through the slick veneer applied by the media to their actions and indeed their inactions.

Today however Rob Waltham, restored my faith in Tory stupidity, and confirmed my belief that party membership must be accompanied by a free BUPA lobotomy.

Cllr Waltham has just made some of the most hypocritical statements I’ve seen by a local politician defending the council’s stand on Southern Cross, while merrily wielding the hatchet with the other.

How can the head of Children and Adult Services possibly justify hacking away at meals on wheels, (a life line preventing vulnerable people from entering care homes), and then pretend to be supportive of residents who’s future is threatened by the failure of a private carer?

Perhaps the Tories believe that we will not see the close correlation between the support provided to vulnerable people by the meals on wheels service and the failure of this privatised care service?

I am amazed by the level of stupidity demonstrated here. Does not the failure of Southern Cross demonstrate exactly why services such as care for the elderly, or meals on wheels should not be privatised?

Southern Cross proves to me that private corporations are in the care industry for profit alone, and when they fail (like the banks) it’s the public that suffer, imagine the concern residents will have about their futures?

Perhaps Cllr Waltham can explain his duplicity when he supports the privitisation of the meals onwheels service, yet acknowledges that the failure of a private company charged with providing care for the elderly will require assistance and support from the local tax payer?

There's still time to change your mind and do the right thing...

This is shocking, Only last night me and my wife were talking about this. In most cases of meals and wheels the person delivering the meal can be the only person some pensioners will see and talk too in weeks.

Its sad its going this way as it will all be about profit and how quik it can be done which will mean the pensioners who recieve meals will probably get a rushing person dropping a frozen microwave meal at the door.

Totally agree Luke.

These cuts are being made by a new administration who are finding their feet, they will go ahead with this because it's been proposed before (and rejected by the previous administration) and secondly, those people affected by it are by the very nature of their situation already isolated from society as a whole so they have the smallest voice and are least able to oppose these cuts.

Once they've got in to the mood of it and seen how little opposition there is to this, then they'll get bolder. I suggest that if you feel as appalled by this as I do that you write to or email Cllr Waltham and the conservative group, set up a petition on the council web site and write to the local media expressing your concerns.

Yesterday the Coalition of Resistance decided to produce an open letter to the press regarding this and are looking for signatures for it.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
