Steelworks Gala comes to an end

09 October 2011 by Scunny Independent News

It's a real shame that the Scunthorpe Works gala will no longer be running.

Earlier this week TATA Steel who now operate the plant at Scunthorpe announced that they will no longer be running the gala as part of a £130,000,000 cost saving operation.

To me this is a real slap in the face for a town which has been proud over the generations of the production of "Scunthorpe Steel". To get an idea of the extent the steel works have influenced the town, take a look at this article by Hamst

While its not specifically about steel making, looking back over time it shows what a major roll steel making has played in the heritage of the town.

Here's another excellent piece introducing people who do not know the area to the town, written by a former resident who now lives in London

I've lots of fond memories of the gala, both as a child and a parent, and would hope that a similar gala could be organised by the Council or perhaps the Scunthorpe Charter Trustees in years to come to help celebrate a town which I love.
