Star Gazing

16 April 2012 by Scunny Independent News

Had a few messages this morning asking about the International Space Station and if we can see it again following the photos we published last night.

Well - its a case of good news / bad news.

Good news is that over the next 4 days the ISS will be at its brightest, with its best magnitude of 3.3 on Tuesday evening at 21:35.

The bad news is that it looks like its going to cloud over again, so it might be difficult to see.

The table below shows when you can expect to see it from Scunthorpe, most evenings you will first spot the station in the direction marked "Rises in" at about 10 degrees above the horizon. It will appear to rise slowly at first and will then appear to move faster as it moves more directly overhead.

If you are looking to photograph it then a tripod will be required with a camera capable of taking a delayed exposure photograph, the one's we've put in the gallery are all about 30 seconds with an ISO of 800 and a wide aperture setting (fstop 4 or as low as it will go!!)

If there's a lot of interference from other light sources try increasing the fstop or dropping the ISO (or both) but its probably best to have a few practice shots before the fly over (its what we did!!)

If you do get any photos of it, please, we'd love to share them in our gallery, so feel free to add them http://www.visitscunthorpe.com/ScunthorpePhotos/gallery/Space-Station-Over-Scunthorpe

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
