Sorry You have been banned from posting....

28 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

This is the message increasing numbers of people are seeing on the local evening telegraph web site in Scunthorpe when ever they post anything which draws a comparison between the Evening Telegraph and Visit Scunthorpe articles. Why is this? Well to be frank, we are at a loss to understand. Over the last two weeks we've received half a dozen reports from regular contributors to the VisitScunthorpe.com web site that after they've commented on Evening Telegraph articles referencing similar stories on Visit Scunthorpe that they've had comments removed and in some cases have then been banned from the web site. To date this has not happened to me. Until today. Regular reader's may recall an article we published on the 17th following a freedom of information request made into the costs of refurbishing offices at Pitwood House in Scunthorpe. Now obviously this particular issue is contentious, and to parody and old adage its some what akin to a red flag to a Tory, however why poster's should receive ban's for linking to articles on VisitScunthorpe is some what of a mystery. VisitScunthorpe.com has been running for over a year, and has to date never banned a single poster. Here we have simple rules, do not make personal attacks against individuals, do not incite hatred or violence. What criteria the Evening Telegraph use to remove posts and issue bans does however seem to lack clarity. The Evening Telegraph does have a policy on external linking, but still allows people to link to other articles on other web sites which are not Visit Scunthorpe, so there seems to be a lack of clarity on this score. Whatever the criteria for removal and banning is, it does not seem to to be supportive of the community views which our local paper would expect to reflect. The article in question was this : http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/news/Tories-criticised-plush-163-12k-office-relocation/article-3378614-detail/article.html We posted a link to what we believe was a fuller article on this matter which not only gave the headline figures, but showed a breakdown of what materials had actually been purchased, following a Freedom of Information request. Below the article we dated when the original version had appeared on Visit Scunthorpe. We have provided several other links, again without detriment to the ET, but more akin to providing additional extra content which their valuable column inches do not allow them to accommodate. For example, a story regarding the rebuilding of Kashmir Garden's contained more background information on the councillor concerned, and also provided a link to his entry on the local council's register of interests. However we are not going to speculate as to why these removals and bans seem to becoming more common. Visit Scunthorpe is a community resource and is open to all to post news, views and comments on from the North Lincolnshire area, and long will it continue to do so.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
