Same Leopard, Same Spots

14 December 2010 by Bernard

This article printed, curiously, in the Daily Mail gives an indication of the mindset of senior Conservative politicians. "A senior Conservative council chief has suggested that unemployed Northerners should replace Eastern European immigrants and 'pick cherries on fruit farms' instead of living on benefits. David Shakespeare, leader of Buckinghamshire County Council and head of the Conservative group in the Local Government Association, said people from poorer parts of the country affected by the rising joblessness and public sector cuts should go to work in orchards. Mr Shakespeare made his 'let them pick fruit' comment during a LGA debate about the prospect of councils being allowed to keep the business rates they collect rather than being redistributed to poorer areas. 'The North may replace the Romanians in the cherry orchards,' he said. That may be a good thing.' His remarks were immediately seized on by Labour, who likened them to Norman Tebbits infamous advice to the unemployed in the 1980s to 'get on your bike'. Tom Blenkinsop, Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said the remark undermined David Camerons claim to be a 'one nation' leader by portraying Northerners as second-class citizens. 'These types of comment prove [David] Cameron hasnt reformed his party one bit. To see northerners in this second class, undermining and disrespectful way is typical for a very southern-orientated political party like the Conservatives. The Tory Party certainly cant claim to be the party of one nation,' he said. Michael Dugher, Labour MP for Bansley East, has now written to Mr Cameron asking if he will condemn the comments. 'Do you appreciate how out of touch, insensitive and insulting these comments are? Doesnt it just demonstrate that the Tories are still the same old nasty party? he said. And even Conservate colleagues condemned Mr Shakespeare's comments. Dame Margaret Eaton, chairman of the LGA, immediately reprimanded Mr Shakespeare and called his comments 'horrible'. Rob Light, leader of the Conservative group on Kirklees Metropolitan Council and an ally of Mr Shakespeares on the LGA Executive, distanced himself from his colleague. 'Im assured its the view of an individual and not of Conservatives in local government. Its certainly not the view of Conservatives in local government in the North,' he said. Mr Dugher said Mr Shakespeare - one of the most senior Conservative figures in local politics - should resign. A Conservative Party spokesman said there would be no disiplinary action, but added:'This is an unacceptable use of language and does not represent the views of the Conservative Party.' The budget cuts are likely to hit the North far harder than the South, with many northern areas reliant on the the public sector for their jobs. In October, a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research found the north-east would lose 4.1 per cent of its jobs over the next four years, compared with 3.1 per cent in London and the south-east." Keep it clean! .

isn't this about Scunthorpe ,not councillors copying and pasting articles that make a political point they aren't eloquent enough to make themselves. Save it for your own personal blogs.

Bernard, I've got no objection to political opinions regardless of their bias. I am however a little concerned that this article looks like it's been copied and pasted in here; obviously I'm keen to avoid litigation in any way and have asked other poster's to change / resubmit articles for this very same reason. Could you review this please and perhaps re-write your commentary in your own words, or confirm that the article is its self original. I take Fans64's point about it not being directly about Scunthorpe, but concede that it does affect people living in the north. I'm deliberately not writing about more national issues but am considering a "National News" section to deal with broader issues which will affect readers, what are people's thoughts on this?

I worry the site might get hijacked by councillors and Mp's for their own end. They have their own blogs and the ST for that. They bar people who disagree with them from their own blogs,it seems unfair to give them an extra vessel to further their own careers

I offer my sincere apologies to the readers of visitscunthorpe.com as this is not my own work. I pointed out that it was a direct lift from the Daily Mail and that it demonstrated the mindset of Senior Conservative politicians. It was originally written by a Daily Mail Reporter and appeared on December 14th 2010 under the title "Let them pick fruit: Tory councillor says unemployed Northerners should pick fruit rather than claim benefits". A very similar story was also carried by the Daily Telegraph on the same day. Fans64, I am not trying to hijack visitscunthorpe.com - perish the thought - Thoades provides us all with a valuable addition to our local media, which I personally cherish, and that he is considering widening his coverage is something to be welcomed. At present myself and Bernard - I am Paul BTW - are setting up all our communications systems in readiness for the 2011 local elections and as I wrote in an earlier article, once these are in place I will let everyone on visitscunthorpe.com know. We have tried to be open and honest about posting on visitscunthorpe.com but if we have offended Thoades, or any of the readers, we humbly apologise. Just a final thought, I hope that all the readers accept that some aspiring politicians can make a point in an eloquent and lucid manner - there are times when I surprise myself quite frankly! Be assured, Fans, that as and when all the systems are in place, we will gladly welcome all commentators at our on-line facilities - just as long as you stay reading visitscunthorpe.com as well!

when I 1st saw this site I thought it was a great community project, politicians posting has wrecked the ideal for me.It's what they are good at, it all become party political and not issue driven,as for welcome on any of your sites Mick Grant doesn't share your point of view when pressed on difficult subjects he bars comments which contradict his point if view .Nik Dakin is yet to reply on my emailed question about councillors taking pensions from the council despite not being employees and another question /plea on safe standing at Gp.Incidently Mr Percy the Goole bloke has replied promptly on both questions,on safe standing he outline who he has spoken to at Westminster and his secretary has also contacted me wit a promise of further updates. Surely the issue is what matters not who is driving it?especially on a site which is such a great idea as this one. Look at the ST letter spage to see what a disaster it becomes when politicians get bickering

The Tories and Lib Dems are attacking the welfare state in a way that will have a massive effect on ordinary people in Scunthorpe, they deserve holding up for what they really are. I'm not in the Labour party and was highly critical of the last government, especially over Iraq/ PFI in the NHS/non redistribution of wealth/anti union laws etc etc, but it's hard to imagine a politician from any party but the Tories suggest that Northerners leave their homes to go pick fruit for his mates.

In response to some of these comments and concerns raised by readers on this and other articles, I've created a new section and have moved this article there. This is exactly the kind of debate I'd hoped to provoke when I set up this site a year ago, but I take Fan's point that it should not dominate the site. Hopefully the new categorisation of news articles will provide a workable compromise which will allow every one to use VisitScunthorpe.Com in a manner they are happy with.
