Rural Broadband Champion Launch Success Claim

31 May 2012 by Scunny Independent News

Press release from North Lincolnshire Council:

The Northern Lincolnshire Broadband Champion launch that took place last night (Tuesday 29 May) at the Kingsway Business Centre in Scunthorpe - was a huge success.

The event was well represented by residents, businesses, and North and North East Lincolnshire Council representatives keen to support the government’s plan to bring superfast broadband to those areas that currently have no or limited broadband - mainly rural areas by 2015.

As a result of the event, the council has now recruited around 20 volunteers.

Broadband champions who attended the launch last night, were ready to promote the benefits and completion of surveys by engaging with their local communities at events, local groups, clubs and businesses, to show that North and North East Lincolnshire has the demand for better broadband so we can prove our need to perspective telecoms providers.

We need to have 5,000 residents and 500 business surveys completed by the end July 2015.  Currently 2,100 residents and 220 businesses have completed the survey.

Cllr Neil Poole, cabinet member for policy and resources at North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“We are keen to work with local communities by adopting the support of the local broadband champions who are willing to raise the profile of broadband and its benefits to both businesses and residents in their community.

“Without a doubt, broadband champions will play a vital role in helping us stimulate interest and get people’s support, so we can demonstrate that there is a clear demand for broadband. We need as mush support as possible, so help us reach our target and show the Government that we need faster broadband.

”If anyone else would like to be a broadband champion, please get in touch with Yvonne Thompson on 01724 296926.”

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
