Precious Cargo - Stories of the World

28 October 2010 by Hamst

Stories of the World is one of the major projects of the Cultural Olympiad and will enable people of all backgrounds and from every part of the UK to become 'curators' of the collections and objects held in museums, libraries and archives. Young people and communities are being invited to take part in creating exciting new exhibitions, events and activities in North Licolnshires museums for the Cultural Olympiad, a four year programme culminating during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Precious Cargo is the regions contribution to Stories of the World. The project will explore how the objects in North Lincolnshires museums, ideas and customs have found their way across the world and become precious items of heritage in the process. Exhibitions themed as Precious Cargo will reveal the regions World Collections in new and creative ways. How have objects, ideas and customs found their way across the world and become precious items of North Lincolnshires heritage in the process. What are the things that are precious for North Lincolnshire people. What stories do they tell. Museums in the region led by Renaissance Yorkshire are inviting individuals, groups and especially young people aged between 14 - 24 to work together to explore these questions. Contributors will select objects from collections, share their own precious things and design exhibitions around them. They will create new public events, art and performances. Together they will tell their own, historical and imagined stories about the journeys connecting North Lincolcshire and the world, the people and their shared heritage. Precious Cargo is a big contributor to the Cultural Olympiad major project Stories of the World which involves more than 50 museums and libraries across the country. Together they aim to ensure that London 2012 is remembered for a once-in-a-generation legacy of creativity, culture and heritage told through the treasured items and voices of North Lincolnshires communities and young people. Regionally there are 15 museums involved, North Lincolnshire Museum being one of them. They are asking for people, partuculary between 14 - 24 to get get involved in The Stories of the World project by helping organise, amongst other things, community events with dancing and music from different culrures, donating objects, producing short films or organising photography sessions around local community groups. North Lincolnshire Museum on Twitpic North Lincolnshire Museum Over the next two years the museum will be working with local community groups in North Linconshire who have come to the area for employment. They hope to gather stories, objects, photographs and oral history which will help tell the story of why people have moved to the area and from where they came. This will result in a Precious Cargo exhibition which will be on display at North Lincolnshire Museum on Oswald Road during the summer of 2012. The museum will be working with local groups to develop an Archaeology Gallery, making it accessible to all. This will involve re-displaying cases, a new family activity area and a fun and interactive space to enjoy. There will also be a display at Normanby Hall Museum in the Halls Costume Gallery featuring tradional clothing from the cultures represented in the Preciuos Cargo exhibition. Whilst over at Normanby Farming Museum will be an exhibition celebrating the achievements of Lal White, a local cyclist who in the early 1920s was an Olympic cycling medal winner. People can get involved by contacting the museum service at museum@northlincs.gov.uk or follow them on Facebook at North Lincolnshire Museum

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
