Pot Hole Funding

23 February 2011 by Paul Rhoades

The government has today revealed councils will share 100-million to repair roads damaged during the big freeze this Winter. North Lincolnshire Council has not yet been told how much money it is set to receive, but is expecting to recieve significant help having written to the Government asking for help in January. Last year North Lincolnshire Council received an additional 500k from central government to help with pot hole repairs following the heavy snow in January. At the meeting of the full council on January 19, Labour members moved a motion which read: "This council agrees to write to the Department of Transport to request grant aid to fund road repair schemes caused by the extreme winter weather. In doing so, council notes almost 500,000 was provided by the previous Labour government for pothole repairs during the 2010/11 financial year. This is on top of an extra 500,000 contained within the Labour group's budget this year." Visit Scunthorpe has learned that while the motion was passed, Conservative councillors chose not to support the motion and instead put forward their own motion attempting to block such a letter. As a local resident I'm very surprised to hear that such simple minded pettiness is abound, surely road repairs are something that every one benefits from? We'd be very interested to hear from any Tory representatives on the council to get their take on this. Cllr Bernard Regan, Labours spokesman on Highways and Transport, said: "We wrote to the government asking for extra money to match that the previous Labour government gave us a year ago. I am delighted the government has responded positively to our letter, despite the attempts by the local Tories to sabotage the process." Does this set the scene for the Tory position on spending in North Lincolnshire? Will they oppose everything the Labour Group proposes as they try to make ends meet with reduced funding and government cuts? Are these cuts a Tory ideology or an economic necessity? So much for being in this together with Cameron's big society.
