Popular Skatepark Remains Closed

30 March 2011 by Hamst

A popular Scunthorpe skatepark remains closed into a second week after vandals had wheeled a moped onto the area and set it alight. The resulting heat has cause damage to part of the concrete surface rendering the skate park unsafe. Closed and awaiting repair The 100,000 skatepark which sits in the 38 acre Manor Park off Burringham Road was opened in 2008 and leased to a local voluntary group called Wanna Sk8. Under the terms of the lease they would be responsible for financing, constructing, running, maintaining, insuring and managing the skatepark. It has suffered with problems in the past with yobs harassing the skaters which has seen them being subjected to stone attacks and having to dodge empty booze bottles, vomit and litter left at the Burringham Road park. Determined skaters still using the park The mobile park warden informs that a specialist company needs to be brought in to make and effective repair but was unsure as to when this would be and so the gates would remain closed for the foreseeable future. He added that the local authority has had closed the skate area on the grounds of health & safety to the disgruntlement of local skaters. This however hasn't deterred those who are determined to still use the area as they simply climb over the fence to skate. The mobile warden continued, so long as the gates remain closed with the notices attached then the local authority has done all it can to close off the area. The cost and date of the repair has yet to be confirmed.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
