Police Confiscate Booze in Bottesford

28 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Last night saw many year 11 students celebrating the end of school, leaving them with just their exams to complete. It's also one of those occasions where more youths than normal can be seen out drinking on Avenue (bull's) field in Bottesford. Not that this is in any way irregular, Friday nights are a favourite, as are Saturdays, and the areas between the sports hall, Bull's field and the Beck often play host to many teenagers clearly worse for ware for drink.

Bulls field is an especially favoured public space, which is more often than not frequented on Friday and Satuday nights by large numbers of under age drinkers, the antics of which can intimidate many of the residents living in the area, a lot of whom are retired.

Last night however saw several patrols being made by members of the Scunthorpe South community policing team and resulted in a very marked difference in the usual rowdy and drunken Friday night behaviour residents have come to expect.

Patrols entered the area at regular intervals throughout the evening, alternating between Holme Hall Avenue, Avenue Field and Cavendish Park.

According the the twitter feed of Sargent James Main, Community Sargent for Scunthorpe South, over 50 cans and bottles were confiscated from under age drinkers in addition to 7 litres of WKD.

Avenue Field has played host on many occasions to the Street Scene project run by police and community action groups which sees football coaching sessions from Scunthorpe United being run for teenagers. While this is great for teenagers in the week, Friday and Saturday nights do seem to have started becoming a bit of a problem on the field recently.

Residents did notice a significant improvement last night, after numbers have started to build over recent weeks due to the lighter nights and dry weather. It would seem that the extra patrols did their job and kept drinkers off the streets.
