Parking Revenues Drop by £250,000

17 January 2012 by Paul Rhoades

Figures taken from the planned budget seen by Visit Scunthorpe earlier today show a fall in revenue income received by the council of £250,000 in the last year from parking fees.

Readers may remember that one of the election pledges of the conservative group was to provide free car parking. There was a great deal of debate at the time not just as to where this free car parking may be available, but also as to what it would cost the tax payer.

To date councillors have remained tight lipped on this last point, and have made no official announcement as yet.

However, we can reveal that the figures noted in the budget report going to cabinet next week do show a reduction of parking income of £250,000.

It has been suggested that some of this reduction in revenue may be due to people using the car park's less, though the council's own figures released on their web site in November actually show a significant increase in foot fall in Scunthorpe town centre.

Free car parking was introduced in 2011 providing shoppers in Brigg with 2 hours free, and users of car parks in Ashby and Scunthorpe with 1 hour free. This was hotly debated at the time, with many people suggesting that this was unfair on shoppers in Scunthorpe and Ashby, and that the same amount of free time should be given to each shopping area.

What does come as a shock however, is that on the day that the council announce that they are considering further cuts to the tune of £1,120,000, and are discussing changes to Adult Services strategy, news also comes to light of a reduced income revenue from parking fees, which at a time of austerity and cuts is something the council could do well to not be incurring.
