North Lincs Against the Cuts Meeting

24 January 2011 by Martin Copson

Around 50 people attended the 'North Lincs Against the Cuts' meeting hosted by the local Coalition of Resistance group. The audience included a broad spectrum of political groups, public sector workers, trade unionists and members of the public. Speakers at the meeting included Cllr Mark Kirk, the leader of North Lincs council, who told the meeting about his personal experience of the public sector and his opposition to the cuts. However, when questioned about whether he would take a stand on the council against cuts, Cllr Kirk said he would do his best to minimise the effects of the cuts but had to implement them none the less. Paul Holmes, Kirklees Unison Branch Sec, told the meeting that the richest 1000 people in the country increased their personal wealth by 77bn last year alone. this statistic becomes even more relevant when counterpoised to the 83bn of savings the government plans to make over the next 4 years. Paul said that this shows that there are people who can pay and who should be made to pay. Martin Deane of Hull Green party also put forward alternative ways of cutting the deficit including cracking down on tax loopholes and cancelling Trident. Other speakers included Dot Gibson of the National Pensioners Forum who stated that she had felt the hope after the second world war that a society could be built based on the ideas of solidarity and a common interest, and that all of the gains made since are at stake as a results of the austerity program. The undoubted star of the show was local sixth form student Max Bell who put the case against tuition fees and in defence of EMA passionately and eloquently. Max highlighted the hypocrisy of politicians who benefited from free, high quality education telling the next generation that they must come out of university with debt the size of a mortgage. Everyone went away buoyed up for the ongoing struggle against the government's program of cuts, privatisation and wealth distribution from the poor to the rich. The next coalition of Resistance organising meeting will take place on Tuesday 1st February at the Highfield House pub in Scunthorpe at 7.30pm.

Alongside the ST's coverage, I am grateful once again for your seemingly accurate and genuine feedback of the level of attendance and relevance of the coalition's meeting. Certainly a far more credible and reputable version of the facts and events than the perceived dodgy, hyped up misrepresentation and opportunistic political posturing, as posted by NLC Labour cllr Grant on his blog.

Bill, I've just read your comments on Mick Grant's blogg, and see that having been banned there you've decided to post comments here. I don't agree with your view of misrepresentation or opportunistic posturing, and refer you to a response made on Mick's blogg by Martin Copson (who posted this article here), which to my mind summarises beautifully what this struggle is about. "the best speaker was Max Bell a young lad whos first political act was to take part in the protest at John Leggott college over tuition fees, hardly one of the political class. Most of us simply want to see a better world and will fight whichever party stands in the way of this goal." I personally had hoped to attend to add my voice of disdain to cuts which I have said many times seem idealogical, but was sadly in Glasgow. Many thanks to Martin for not only organising the meeting, but also for finding the time to post the above summary on Visit Scunthorpe. As you'll know from being a regular reader both at VisitScunthorpe and on Mick's blogg that we do regularly hold differing opinions, but on this matter we stand together, these cuts must be opposed unanimously by all. The Tories would like nothing more than to see working class people such as our selves falling out over trivial irrelevances.

The Coalition of Resistance is prepared to work with all those opposing cuts, whatever mistakes (percieved or actual) they have made in the past. The issue may come when labour councils start cutting jobs and slashing services. We will protest at local council cuts and stand with trade unionists if they vote to strike against job cuts, whether they are implemented by Tory or Labour councils.

Did councillor Kirk offer to take a cut in expenses, they are clearly OTT as Mick Grant has openly bragged on his blog expenses are his only source of income, how can expenses be a source of income ? Suffer together brothers eh? Don't join any group a long standing party member gets involved with,it's always party 1st mates 2nd principles 3rd. I am also barred from posting on Cllr Grants blog for repeating questions he wouldn't answer
