North Lincolnshire Museum Wins Award

09 January 2012 by Paul Rhoades

For the second year running, North Lincolnshire Museum located on Oswald Road in Scunthorpe has won a Learning Outside The Classroom Quality badge.

The award has been granted due to the outstanding work the local museum does with local schools having hosted over 30 workshops all of which have been geared into the curriculum taught in local schools. Workshops have included Roman times, the Victorians, Fossils, World War 2 and archaeology, and have encouraged school children around the region to take an interest in history and their environment through hands on experiential learning tasks.

Cllr John Briggs, cabinet member for Asset and Estate Management, Sport, Leisure and Culture, said:

“This is great news that North Lincolnshire Museum has been awarded the LOtC Quality Badge for the second year running.

“Well done to all the staff, you have all worked extremely hard to provide brilliant services for schoolchildren outside of the classroom.

“The LOtC Quality Badge lets teachers and others organising educational visits know that if they bring children to us they can be assured that we offer good quality educational experiences and manage risk effectively.”

Cllr Rob Waltham, cabinet member for Adult and Children’s Services, said:

“It is fantastic that we have this facility in North Lincolnshire. I am sure that pupils, teachers and residents alike appreciate this brilliant facility.”

Its excellent news not only marking the achievements of the museum, but also to see such positive and supportive comments being made by Cllr's Briggs and Waltham at a time at which the local council is conducting a comprehensive review and consultation over the provision of Leisure services which may include the future and funding for local museums throughout the region.

Lets hope that this major achievement is suitably acknowledged in any review of service and that the local museum continues to receive the support and funding of the council following such positive comments from our local leaders.

For any one interested, the local council have organised a public consultation meeting to discuss plans for Leisure services in North Lincolnshire tomorrow evening, 5pm to 7pm at the 20:21 Arts Centre in Church Square Scunthorpe.

Details of other meetings also organised by the council around the region are available here:
