None of The Above Lobby

03 May 2010 by Paul Rhoades

There's a lot of discussion in the town regarding the None of The Above Lobby. This is a movement which is becoming increasingly popular along disenfranchised voters who feel that the choice of party and individual standing is inappropriate for them. Due to poor voter turn out over past years, I strongly believe that if you believe that none of the above are fit to represent you then you must go down the polling station and tell them! Not doing so and then complaining won't solve anything. Spoiled ballots are counted at the end of an election and published. In the 2005 election there was a 52% turn out in Scunthorpe. (61% national average) This suggests that was a foregone conclusion that Scunthorpe will return Labour so people didn't bother voting. This also means that with Morley gaining 54% of vote cast on the day, that by my reckoning only around 25% of the people of Scunthorpe elected our last MP. Hardly an endorsement for democracy is it? This does not have to be the case. if every one who didn't vote at the last election in Scunthorpe went out and voted for Neil Poole the Liberal Candidate then he would get in by a land slide. Why didn't they vote liberal last time? Well that's simple, the press told them it would be a waste of time and a wasted vote. The press are very good a manipulating public opinion to ensure that we the public vote for who they want. This is typified by the scare stories being pushed out this week about the dangers of a hung parliament. In a hung parliament politicians will be forced to work together and listen to the public, NGO's and lobby groups more, not less. Surely this is a good thing. So if you feel that none of the above are representative of your views, get down the polling station and spoil that ballot, if on the other hand you think that change and reform are required, then vote Liberal Democrat on Thursday.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
