Nic Dakin asks 1st Question in the house

04 June 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Today marks a historic event for newly elected Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin when he asked his 1st question of the Speaker in the House Of Commons. True to his word, Nic seems to be making a real start to putting the interests of local residents and businesses first by starting the ball rolling over a campaign to either frieze or reduce the Humber Bridge Toll. From a personal point of view, I really hope that the tolls are at the very least frozen, but I don't think in the current economic climate the government would consider reducing or abolishing the toll, which would be the ideal outcome. Personally I think this is a real shame as I do quite a lot of IT Support and radio engineering work over in Hull, and this is one overhead which over a week soon adds up when taken in to consideration with diesel and parking costs. Reducing the bridge toll would also make Barton a more attractive to people from the North bank and may help maintain house prices. Nic's question was well received by the Speaker who advised Nic on how to start a debate on the matter within the house. Nic's question was reported by Mick Grant as being "Will the Leader of the House find time for a debate next week on reducing Humber bridge tolls, or maintaining the current freeze on them, so that they are no longer a tax on local people and businesses in my area?" So Good Luck Nic, a nice first question, lets see what comes of it.

Well said, although I think the Tolls could either go or be reduced, but until the Government wipe off the huge debt that the bridge board owe then the Toll will stay, it will never raise the money to pay it off even if the Tolls were raised, people drive just did what we did in the old days and drive around via Goole, even now with the cost of fuel from Scunthorpe it is almost as economical to go around but it is hardly "Green". Its about time they scrapped the debt if they want to be seen as Green. Another point worth making regarding the bridge, as us southerners have always said all the money raised by the then Humberside council got spent up north, not true? then just look at where you can go as you leave the bridge north side, you can go north, east and west, down south you get east or west, the region has been crying nay screaming out for a decent route south down this side of the country for years, we have all this industry, docks etc and a 30 mile drive west to the nearest southern route because I dont consider the A15 as a road, especially one for the 21st century.

Agree with you there, though I must admit I've found my self considering a drive around a couple of times this last week while I've been working near Driffield, since I swapped to Diesel I would imagine financially I would probably save a couple of quid. However as you've probably already worked out I'm quite concerned about the state of the planet so I try to limit my motoring as much as possible.
