New Windtower Plan

18 May 2011 by Hamst

This could be the view looking down Scunthorpe High Street if a planning application to install a 130m high windtower on the premises of a local steel foundry is given permission. predictedviewofhighstre.jpg Image by Wind Direct showing the windtower in the middle distance.

As reported last October, Wind Direct Ltd, on behalf of Bradken UK Ltd had applied for planning permission to erect a temporary 70m Anemometry Mast at the foundry site in Dawes Lane. The anemometer was to be in situation for two years to form part of a feasibility assessment for potential wind energy scheme at the site.

The mast was installed to provide data on wind speed and direction at Bradkenï's site, this data is used to form part of the evidence base that is required to assess the potential of the site for a wind energy scheme and to advise the appropriate and sensitive design of such a scheme should it be considered feasible.

As a result of this test data an application has been submitted to North Lincolshire Councils planners to install a windtower and associated infrastructure including access track and hardstanding. Extensive investigations into the geology of the area have taken place and although the land has been extensively mined for ironore it's been concluded it is suitable to site a windtower.

There were, however, concerns raised during the consultations from the National Grid and Network Rail about the proximity of the proposed windtower to their installations although neither have any objection in principle. A decision date for the application has yet to be given. For full details of the application click here

It's about time that residents and planners embraced alternative energy in a more positive manner. Today's sad announcement of 1,200 job losses at the Tata site underline the need for the town to invest in renewables and to become a key player in this emerging business. Perhaps a more positive attitude and approach to earlier applications for renewable energy sources could have put the town closer to the centre rather than the periphery of the renewable industry and provided new and alternative markets for Tata steel products locally.
