New School Building Gets Underway

07 March 2011 by Hamst

Construction firm Henry Boot Construction Ltd have been awarded the contract to build the new 5.5m primary school on the towns Westcliff Estate. The new school, on Dryden Road, will be built on the existing playing field to the rear of the current buildings and is expected to open Easter 2012. It will be built on two floors with a central heart surrounded by several large classrooms to cater for 315 pupils, there will also be a 26-place nursery. A temporary compound has been constructed on Manor Park, next to the school, to service the building of the new school. Work under way at the temporary compound next to the school. More than 50 per cent of the total energy of the building will come from sustainable sources. The heat will come from the ground by ground source heat pumps. The electrical energy to drive these pumps will come from the sun using 340 solar panels on the roof. There will be recycled water for use in the toilets. The building is expected to meet the criteria for very good in the BREEAM classification (environmental standard). The ground floor will consist of; Three infant classrooms, Two foundation classrooms (including nursery), Sure Start Childrens Centre, Specialised area for teaching pupils across North Lincolnshire with hearing impairments Whilst the first floor will see; Six classrooms for junior school pupils, Play deck. Once complete the existing building will then be demolished during the summer term 2012, and new play areas will be reinstated by September 2012. The old school was opened in September 1964 at a cost of 125,000, in September 1997, the former infant and junior schools were merged into a primary unit.

Hamst are there plans to reinstate the green areas when the school is finished? Our Market Garden is getting eaten up at an alarming rate

Fans64 The planning application was granted in accordance with 14 conditions, none of them mention reinstating the green grass area they have took up for the compound, though I should imagine that would be the plan. Interestingly there is no application (what I can find)to suspend that parcel of land from public use whilst the works ongo, this begs the question could I be prosecuted for trespass if I ventured in there.
