New Lease Of Life For Two Town Centre Buildings

24 November 2010 by Hamst

Two town centre premises could be set to benefit from an injection of new life if planning consent is given by planners. The former Drill Hall on Cole Street and the building which until recently was The Mayfair on Cross Street have had plans put in to convert them into flats and a Hotel respectively. The former Drill Hall, which dates from c1910, was until recently being used by the Lindsey Blind Society but has stood empty since. The developer is seeking permission to carry out alterations to provide an initial four self contained flats with associated parking to the rear. The building has been extended to the rear over the years with various outbuildings which have lead to the site being over developed and described as a little cluttered. It is proposed initially to carry out alterations to the building to form 4 flats with the demolition of existing extensions and outbuildings attached to the rear of the property. A small rear extension is also proposed to enhance the level of accommodation proposed for Flat No3. The submitted scheme allows for the provision of 12 parking spaces which is to serve the whole development of 8 Flats. The external appearance of the building is to predominantly remain as existing apart from the provision of an enlarged window opening at first floor level to the front elevation, the replacement of the existing flat roof over the ground floor extension adjacent the former Kinsley Labour Club with a new pitched roof covering and the replacement/upgrading of the existing timber windows and doors with PVCu. Whilst over at Cross Street the former Mayfair Pub, which has stood empty since its closure in July 2009, could be set to become a Hotel. The building is originally a late Victorian terrace which was converted into the Reform Club in 1912, later to become The Mayfair Club it closed down in 1994. It was then re-launched as The Mayfair Public House but again closed in 2009. The Mayfair, Cross Street, Scunthorpe.
