New Archaeology Gallery at NL Museum

07 April 2011 by Paul Rhoades

A new archaeology gallery has opened at North Lincolnshire Museum allowing visitors to experience a walk through North Lincolnshire's history and learn more about local archaeology. Despite Scunthorpe being a very modern town, The North Lincolnshire area is a treasure trove of early occupation and human history. A few weeks ago on Visit Scunthorpe we produced a feature on North Conesby and the recently reclaimed moated house which in the 1920's was covered over by the Lysights Steel Works. Finds in the area also include an Anglo Saxon settlement and lots of artefacts from the Roman Occupation along the length of Ermine Street. The new gallery also features an interactive area especially designed for children to allow them to enjoy the new archaeology display cases and graphic panels, which showcase some amazing local objects including the Winterton Roman Cup. There are also some new larger display cases, interactive sound and more modern and up to date information panels and labels on exhibits. A new 'Spotlight on ... Case' has been introduced and will change every six months with a different display of themed-objects. Funding for the new gallery came from Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) Renaissance Yorkshire as part of the 2012 Ready programme. The new gallery opening coincided with the opening of the museum's latest exhibition, Our Sporting Life: A Celebration of Scunthorpe United, a review of which is currently being written by another Visit Scunthorpe member.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
