More police electioneering investigations

18 April 2011 by Paul Rhoades

Visit Scunthorpe have this afternoon been shown emails alleging more wrongdoing on behalf of conservative candidates in north Lincolnshire. Complaint has been made to the returning officer regarding a statement in a conservative leaflet distributed in the Burton & Winterton ward. In any election all literature must be accurate and not contain slurs of character or untruths. Complain has been made regarding the statement "For too long Labour Councillors, who think only of the allowances and free food, have represented you" Ian Cawsey, Labour election agent for Burton & Winterton, and former Brigg and Goole MP, has made complaint to the returning officer. In his complaint, Mr Cawsey states that "labour councillors do not think only of the allowances and free food", and that goes on to state that his wife, one of the former labour councillors in that area had not made any claims in 4 years. We know for a fact that Linda Cawsey, is one of only two councillors who so far this year has not made a claim for mileage or any other form of subsistence or expenses. The other councillor being Cllr Mrs Redfern, leader of the opposition Conservative party. This can be clearly seen in the recent articles on expenses published on Visit Scunthorpe. The previous councillors representing Burton and Winterton were Linda Cawsey and Bernard Regan. To date Linda has claimed her basic allowance and her special responsibility allowance totalling 11,559.00 Bernard has claimed a total of 18,179.25 which includes subsistence of 337.50, 845 in mileage and 89.75 in parking charges. the remaining balance is made up for his responsibilities and his basic allowance.

Just a quick update that local Conservative for Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy has today stated on his twitter feed that 3 Labour candidates have been reported to the police for their election leaflets too. I've asked Andrew to send details through to Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com so that we can make sure that this is also fairly represented on the VisitScunthorpe site. We've not had anything from him or any of his colleagues through yet, but do rest assured that if they do decide to pass us details, we will publish these just as we have the charges raised on behald of the Labour candidates. As Andrew and his friends will be reading this article, I'll ask again, if there are any Conservative Candidates who would like to provide us with information about why they are standing, what they can offer the voters and which wards, we'd love to hear from you. We've had responses from every one else, other than the Conservatives and would like to include at least one of their candidates so we can give a balanced overview of what's on offer to the voter. Please email EDITORS@VISITSCUNTHORPE.COM or get in touch / follow us on tiwtter using @Thoades

Paul As you must be well aware by now. Having been a lifelong trade unionist and previously a committed Labour supporter; by no means am I your natural conservative or Tory lover. However, after 7 years here in North Lincs; I am admittedly now less so an admirer of the arrogant and shamefaced politics and antics of Scunthorpe's leftist "mafiose". However, I have to say that I've found Brigg & Gooles new conservative MP Andrew Percy to always be courteous and prompt in responding to questions and challenges that I've raised with him. Indeed certain of North Lincolnshire's supposed and deluded local council and community leaders could do far worse, than to take a leaf out of Andrew Percy's book! Politics to one side, in my humble opinion, whether he agrees with you or not; I find Andrew to be refreshingly open, honest, frank and forthright. Unlike certain of the odious, devious and deceitful members of Scunthorpe's political class. So I am bemused as to why your pleas and challenges are seemingly falling on deaf ears?! Unless of course, there are those who struggle to raise any confidence and trust and who are prepared to risk any undue political or parochial backlash; by publicly exposing themselves on supposed independant community forums. Particularly so where they may be a perception of misguided political loyalties and bias. Or dare I suggest, equally prepared to get down and dirty by getting involved in orchestrated devious tit for tat, gutter politics. Presumably, all in a frantic and pathetic desperation to ensure that Labour hang onto control of NLC come May 5 and Scunthorpe's, soon to be marginal, seat in 3 years time. Whatever the damage and risks to North Lincolnshire's and Scunthorpe's image and reputation. Indeed, its future prospects to attract and compete for much needed influx of investment, talent and regeneration?!

Bill, your comments are, sadly, rather laughable regarding AP's behaviour after his shameful antics on a social networking site last night. And this man is supposed to be a local MP!

Bill I'm getting bored of half statements, innuendo and constant skirting around the subject in your posts. If you have something to say about me, please do so. Clearly, so the rest of us can understand it. The very fact that I keep diverse comments such as yours on this site clearly demonstrates the independent nature of this site. If you take the time to look at articles posted by others, you will see that they most certainly do not agree with me, yet, they remain. This in my opinion is "independent", and providing the comments and articles of others remain within the posting guidelines they will remain on the site. Indeed to date I have only ever had to remove one article submitted by a member of the public for libellous content, which I believe was written by your good sel. If you recall you re-wrote and re-submitted that article removing the personal attacks you had made and the article is still on the site today. Many forums would have deleted the post and banned the author. To date I have not banned any one, I don't want to, and will always endeavour to work with the author to come to a solution. To me this is also a sign of the site's independence. I do however find it utterly hilarious that you seem to think that there is some kind of "Misguided Loyalty", bias, collusion, leftist mafiose or that I'm prepared to "get down and dirty" in orchestrated tit for tat gutter politics. To be 100% clear, I am not a member of the Labour Party, and have not been since 1995 when I left. Yesterday's controversy was sparked by Andrew Percy tweeting, nothing else. With regards to these comments, as a public figure he really should know better than to make a statement on a social networking site, and to then not follow it up. Like wise he should also know better than to make personal attacks on individual council officers like he did later last night. I was going to do a brief entry on that today, but those points seem to cover my thoughts on it, if I get a load of comments then I'll create a separate thread for them, and include a screen shot of the tweets if people as. I'll conclude that by saying twitter user's should think more, tweet less, and switch their phones off when in the pub! Again, if Andrew would like to provide us with more details, then we will publish them in full should he email Editors@VisitScunthorpe.Com. Likewise if any Conservative Candidates would like to submit content / reviews and bio's for inclusion and publication on this site then please send them through.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.

How it Works

If you would like to have the ability to add articles and comments to Visit Scunthorpe then all you need to do is sign up with a valid email address for an account. This is free, your email address is confidential and we don't send out spam emails.

Once you've completed the sign up then you are free to post and comment on well... pretty much anything, we just have some basic civilised rules to prevent people from inciting violence, hatred or making individual attacks.
