More on the Pods
21 June 2011 by DaVinciIt's interesting to see the different views about the Pods but disappointing to note the 'Tory-like' ,can we afford it or more meaningfully, do we deserve it argument emerging.
- It is important to understand the provenance of this new facility for the town. The Pods are/were part of a government backed programme called Urban Renaissance to make urban public spaces more appealing through good and inspirational design and better facilities to attract residents, visitors and investors.
- A significant proportion of the costs of this project were provided by the now disbanded Regional Development Agency, Yorkshire Forward as a consequence of the efforts of the Scunthorpe Urban Renaissance Town Team, a community led group made up of residents, workers in Scunthorpe and representatives of North Lincolnshire Council and Yorkshire Forward.
- These funds were competed for and won by Scunthorpe from a pot intended to play a part in the last governments attempts to maximise investment in, perhaps, 'tired' urban areas in the North and can be seen as part of a policy to narrow that North/South divide of quality of life, environment, jobs and investment which exists so clearly
