Metal Thefts

11 January 2012 by Paul Rhoades

Pittwood House in Scunthorpe recently played host to a Metal Theft conference organised by the Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy last month.

Some readers may recall Andrew asking a question about this in the house of commons following the theft of metals from a range of rural locations.

Last year also saw an increase in the theft of cable, leaving several villages and towns in the Scunthorpe area without vital phone services, in some cases for several days.

As a result of the recent number of increases in metal theft,  the North Lincolnshire Safer Neighbourhood Partnership have today announced that they will be providing smart water to churches so they can sprinkle it on their roofs to prevent metal thefts.

Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member with responsibility for the North Lincolnshire Safer Neighbourhood Partnership, said:

“Churches have tolerated this for so long, but there comes a time when enough is enough.

“The majority of metal thefts are from church roofs and it is expensive to replace the lead, so that is why we stepped in to help.  As part of our campaign, 35 churches have taken advantage of our free crime reduction visits to advise on what they can do to help.  We have also agreed to pay for SmartWater so that they can ensure they are doing all they can to help deter criminals.

“Metal theft crime of any nature is not acceptable and we will continue our work to catch the culprits.”

Smart water is a form of uniquely identifiable indelible ultra violet ink which is invisible to the naked eye but when touched can stay on a persons hands for a considerable length of time.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
