MP Warns of rising Scunthorpe Unemployment

17 August 2012 by Scunny Independent News

Despite media hype following on from the Olympics telling us how in the country as a whole unemployment has decreased, our local Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin has a contrary view, which seems to reflect accurately what has actually been reported locally.

Writing on his facebook page Nic Said "A lot of people will have seen in the media today a report that unemployment has fallen however I have received figures to show that in Scunthorpe has risen.

The facts are that the number of unemployed claimants in

Scunthorpe constituency in July 2012 was 3,254. This represents a rate of 8.4% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, the 102nd highest of the 650 UK constituencies.

The number of claimants is 204 higher than in July 2011 and 3 higher than in June 2012.

These figures are particually worrying as towards the end of the year Scunthorpe will also see the closure of Lloyds mortgage Unit.

The Government need to look at areas such as Scunthorpe and invest in growth and the future."

We think that Nic is absolutely right to stand up and make it clear that this claim by the government in the national press is nothing other than political spin designed to make our political leaders look good, while papering over the cracks, ignoring the situation which affects a large amount of the population, and essentially blaming the victim for being out of work. This divide and rule tactic has been used constantly by governments to create prejudice between worker, claimant, job seeker and invalid. This news comes as we find our that JJB will cease trading in Scunthorpe today and amid rumours that Ferry Rd Club has also ceased trading.

One of the major issues we have in Scunthorpe is youth unemployment, there are very few sustainable jobs with prospects for 16-24 year olds which will give an opportunity to show what people are really capable of. It would be good to see leading local companies acting on their own initiative to give young people opportunities to show what they can and how they can contribute positively and get involved in paid work. Sadly there is very little state funded incentive for companies to get involved in these kind of schemes.

It's all too easy nowadays to blame the job seeker for not wanting work, or for being too lazy, or for relying on benefits, as this is increasingly the message we are given by government and media alike. We here at Visit Scunthorpe do not believe this is the case, and would like to hear peoples "Job seeker" stories - so email through your experiences of looking for work in Scunthorpe, good and bad, and we'll put together an article which gives a more balanced view than the national media, by talking to and including those who are really involved - you.

Whilst Nic Dakin is right to highlight that unemployment has increased, I think it is wrong to lay the blame solely at the foot of the Government. Many unemployed people (not all - so are honest family people looking for the right opportunity) simply do not want to work.

We have 2nd and 3rd Generation unemployed families where the younger members look to their elders and see them living a fairly OK if basic living off the state so think to themselves why should I work if I can get subsidised housing and money to live on?

In a recent recruitment campaign a local company looking for 40 new members of staff only received 120 applicants. Two years ago 10 posts generated over 400 applicants.

There is some work out there, it is not necessarily what people want but it could be a step back onto the employment ladder.
