Local Media Should Work Together

22 March 2011 by Paul Rhoades

I had binned this article as not long after the original was posted to Visit Scunthorpe, the local paper had a rethink and re-instated our comments. However, today the censorship is back, and I've had several people emailing in complaining that the ET have removed posts they made from the ET web site to Visit Scunthorpe. It would appear in all of these cases the links were made by our readers on the ET web site linking to articles on our own site where additional / extra information was available for readers. What's more some of those posters seem to have received a ban from posting on the ET site! I've taken a look at the articles on the ET, and can appreciate that the ET journalists have a word limit. Here on Visit Scunthorpe we don't, so we do tend to prattle on a bit in our amateurish manner. However, as we have no commercial limitations, we can also provide a bit more background, additional information for reader's and larger photos those on the ET site. So come on guys, what's the problem? I don't believe that any articles on Visit Scunthorpe were in any way critical of ET journalism, they just added a bit of extra detail and background information which we're sure your reader's would appreciate just as much as they would reading your own take on events. Anyway, here's my original article for which the comments were re-instated about an hour after I published it, lets hope those people banned by the ET for Sharing news about their own Community get their accounts re-instated promptly too eh?

Original article posted 19th March

We are at a loss to understand why the editorial team at the local paper seem to delete any links made from their articles to this site which provide additional information for readers. We'd expect that in order to add to the quality and substance of the claims made in the local paper they'd welcome the opportunity of 3rd party external links being added to their articles to reinforce the information they've published. For example, the ET article where Chris Grayling claims he's not out of touch with local people is a typical example of this. ET Article We feel that the above article should be read in conjunction with this article we published on the 5th of March: Child Poverty and also these two articles published last year: Future Jobs Fund Scrapped and Future Jobs fund success Read about what's really affecting people in Scunthorpe and then tell us that you are in touch with local views Mr Grayling. We think not. Nice one ET Editors, there's nothing quite like working together for the good of the local community is there? We're sure your readers would not be at all interested in finding out more about child poverty and working families in North Lincolnshire, or the Future Jobs funds, so you guys just keep on deleting those links.

Mission Statement

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
