Local MP Seeks Talks to Support TATA Workers

23 May 2011 by Visit Scunthorpe Editors

Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin has today confirmed that he will be meeting with the Minister of State for Business and Enterprise, Mark Prisk to discuss the 1,200 job losses at TATA steel in Scunthorpe.

1,200 job losses were reported in the media on Friday, despite a promised £400 Million investment over the next 5 years at the Scunthorpe site.

Nic will be speaking in a pre recorded interview on Radio Humberside tonight at 5:10 and will appear on look north this evening.

The job losses at TATA steel are a severe blow to Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire, and further fuel the necessity to form a Humber Wide LEP to encourage business growth on the Humber Bank. Failure to form an LEP to date has led to our region being excluded from the Business Enterprise Zone's announced in the last Tory budget. Lets hope that the new Tory led council can build on the foundations already in place to make a pan Humber LEP a reality.

The concern for me is that if the new council makes the 2,000 redundancies the trade unions have claimed. If that happens then it will be a case of 'last one out of Scunthorpe please turn out the lights'

Scunthorpe Steel works used to employ what, 30,000 people at some stage.

Did Scunthorpe go under? No - those people end up in other industries or set up their own businesses or just commuted further for work.

The process of "re-employment" took over 10 years and in the mean time Scunthorpe ended up with the highest drug related crime rate in the country second only to London and Glasgow.

Growing up in 1980's Scunthorpe was grim. Let's hope that these Other Industries appear quickly and opportunities are there for those facing redundancy not just at the works, but in all sectors.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
