Labour Leader Accuses Tories of Legal Breach

06 April 2011 by Paul Rhoades

On what is really the first "real" day of electioneering following the closure of nominations, campaigns in North Lincolnshire have got off to a fiery start with the Leader of the Labour Group in North Lincolnshire accusing the tories of breaching election law. On his blog this afternoon, cllr Mark Kirk, Labour leader, accused the tories of printing a claim that Labour councillors voted to increase parking fees. Cllr Kirk refutes this by stating on his blog "not only has there never been a vote on car parking charges, Labour has made a commitment to freeze charges in local car parks for the next four years" Cllr Kirk also states "it is illegal to make or publish a false statement or fact about the personal character or conduct of an election candidate with the purpose of affecting how many votes they get. This accusation is born out of a war of words currently going on between local Tory MP Andrew Pearcy and Labour Councillor Mick Grant, when earlier in the month Andrew Pearcy challenged Cllr Grant to "Tell the Truth" on his blog, something which he has been doing prolifically of late. It's interesting to see just how quickly the opposing factions have started the mud slinging, lets just hope that Scunthorpe is not branded as another "Woolass" incident and that voters see through the spin and misinformation which accompanies all electioneering. We've had a very quick scan, and can not see what this allegation is based on, however if any readers (including the local Conservatives who read this blog) could post a link to minutes etiher proving or disproving this it would be appreciated, so we can move on and look at real issues making a real difference to people locally.

I am an avid reader of Mick GRANTS anti Tory blog, I have seen him say that the Tories "want" to sack nurses and god knows how many other different public sector workers.I'd wager not one MP from any party actively wants or enjoys making people unemployed,so why is what Mick grant says any different to the lines in this car parking anecdote ,why isn't Mick Grant going to court for his outrageous lies and slurs? Some Local Labour councils are cutting childcare, does this mean Labour want babies to die? It's a pity Mick Grant doesn't use his anger and energy in a more positive way in my opinion, the Boy who cried wolf springs to mind, people just stop listening . This story is a classic example of why Party politics should be wiped from the earth. PS they may not have had a vote on parking charges but they have been increased in recent history have they not ,under Labour? Stop wasting tax payers money on party politics, the police have better things to do like catch politicians who fiddle their expenses, now that is a labour specialty it seems.

This ought to be extraordinarily easy to bottom out. Either the Tories can show in the recent Labour Budget that car parking charges are to be increased, or to a motion that Labour voted for, in which case they are innocent and their leaflet was fair comment, or they cannot in which case they are guilty as charged. The matter was referred to the Police by the Chief Executive, presumably he knew the accuracy (or otherwise) of the leaflet before doing so? Doesn't sound good for the Tories.

Very True John. I'm away today so don't have time to go through council minutes and business properly on the NLC web site as this would prove it once and for all, but I will say in the very quick scan I did have I could not see anything to back their claims up.

Many thanks to the member of the public who sent I'n this link which clearly shows the last time parking charged were set was last year, and actually featured a reduction in short stay charges and a moderate increase in long term parking fees. As cllr Kirk said in his blog the current labour council has pledged to freeze these charges which last year were the first raise I'n 4 years. 10p in 4years isn't bad is it? http://bounceit.info/?i=mb

You couldn\'t make any of this up, how hard you try. A complete utter farce. It can be no wonder that Scunthorpe and North Lincolnshire are in such dire straits; economically, socially and politically!! No offence, but I rest my case.

Personally I wish all political parties would stop posting their ridiculous comics through my letter box at local election time, can we ge them all for trespass? - we know who the good, responsible adult people in our neighbourhoods are, just push them forward for election and get the right people in to do the job instead of all these kids who engage in playground politics in order to secure their allowances and ego's for another 4 years

To be clear, the accusations are based on the meeting of the 23rd feb. Cllr kirk reported the incident to the returning officer It was the returning officers decision to inform the police A criminal investigation is now underway according to the humberside police so further comment on this thread is now closed, sorry :(
