Keep Scunthorpe Standing - Exclusive

08 December 2010 by Paul Rhoades

Nic Dakin, Scunthorpe PM and fan of the Iron, has sent us through the following press release saying why he thinks we should keep Scunthorpe standing! Nic told us: "I believe that Scunthorpe United is a very well run football club which stays very carefully within its means. I congratulate all those associated with the Club including the owner, the manager, the players, the workforce and the fans. In many ways it could be a model for others in football to follow. The Club moved to purpose built Glanford Park in 1988 where the Doncaster Road End has always been safe standing. Now this small club with a capacity of only 9088 has been caught up in safety rules designed for much larger grounds from another age. If the Club remains in the Championship for another year the safe standing capacity will have to be removed and replaced with seating. This will cost money at a time of scarce resources, reduce the ground capacity and take away choice and enjoyment from those fans who prefer to stand. What's more once the ground has gone all-seater it will not be able to revert back even if the team spends the rest of its life in the lower divisions. Cardiff City were allowed to retain standing for 6 years in the Championship so why shouldn't Scunthorpe, the smallest ground in the league, be given similar dispensation. And there are much larger grounds, such as Carlisle United, in the lower leagues that are not affected by these rules. My Westminster Hall debate is designed to bring attention to the issue and encourage the powers that be to look again at this. There is much evidence from the German Bundislega that there can be modern safe standing. Scunthorpe has had safe standing for the whole of its history a history that has seen three England captains play for North Lincolnshire side: Kevin Keegan, Ray Clemence and Ian Botham! Whilst Nic expected a smaller crowd for his Westminster Hall debate it will be all seated! But I hope those there listened carefully to the arguments put and support safe standing at Scunthorpe United. Up the Iron!

IT seems odd to me that the place where I stand and have stood safely for years becomes unsafe at a set date. Nobody in a position to change it seem willing to discuss it.

Visit Scunthorpe is North Lincolnshire's only truly independent, non commercial, community news web site.

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.

Paul. Founder Visit Scunthorpe.
