Is The Baths Hall Failing ??

11 January 2012 by fans64

It was to my dismay that I noticed the Baths hall did not have one single night's entertainment planned for the whole of January.
Since opening it has been operating at less than half capacity, shut closed more nights than open.Ti8s is a financial disaster for the area.
The two big figures are management fees of £445 k rising with inflation for 15 years  to SMG and £640k capital expenditure directly from North lincs council accounts Total of £1.085m before a light bulb has been turned on,an act booked or staff member paid. Around £90k of council funds being used up each month and in January not one penny will be received  from ticket sales.
February it appears there are 5 nights of entertainment planned ,one of which is a rescheduled event from December, how can this continue to be viable?
At an optimistic number of 1000 people per event that's only just enough to cover the basic cost of funding the contract with SMG and cost of capital expenditure.
Why did Mark Kirk go ahead with such a risky and reckless plan in extremely difficult times, when most peopled campaigning to save the baths actually wanted to save the building and it's memories not see it knocked down and replaced with a white elephant . at the wrong time for such a venue. We wanted a lick of paint and a return to a time when the baths used to entertain, pre Rumble band and cover bands.Only losing £200k a year seems nothing compared to potential losses of over a million
Remember this we are stuck with SMG who have not provided any entertainment at the baths hall , for their fee this month ,for 15 years, well done Mark Kirk, pure genius

We have a situation where questions to SMG are directed to the council and my questions to Liz Redfearn get returned directing me to ask SMG as the amount of Council tax cash being poured in is apparently none of my business .Apaarently even the mortgage is secret

Established in January 2010 we have lots of members with a wide range of views who all contribute independently with articles of their own.

You won't find dozens of adverts covering our site, or some poor attempt to promote local business services under the guise of offering a community service.

Here on VisitScunthorpe we are interested in just one thing, building an online community which is representative of the people of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and the surrounding area.
